BIG change in the upcoming #foot release:the *default* key binding for URL mode is being changed from control+shift+u to control+shift+o.I realize this will likely upset and annoy people. Please read the pull request (https://codeberg.org/dnkl/foot/pulls/1243), and in particular, this comment: https://codeberg.org/dnkl/foot/pulls/1243#issuecomment-779491To restore the old defaults, add this to your foot.ini[key-bindings]unicode-input=noneshow-urls-launch=Control+Shift+u

@dnkl thank you for both changes! Other opinion from me: a man with gigantic foot and hand, one hand keybinds are pain to conduct. But more pain are caused by hearing that actual whiners about this kind of tiniest details actually exists. Masses should learn from ueberzug, not to repeat it.

@Nuuskis no matter the change, there will always be those that don't like it.But workflow-breaking changes appear to raise more feelings than other types of changes. For me personally, being able to configure things is enough; I don't expect the defaults of any application to perfectly match my own preferences.

@dnkl I am not a big friend of `C-S-u`, so I don’t care about that, but I consider `<C-s-u>1F4A9` wastly inferior to `<Compose>poo`. Just because Windows are not able to do anything better, doesn’t mean we should follow their route.

@dnkl And yes, I completely disagree with that comment by anarcat. Just because he is not willing to find in his window manager configuration how to set up <Compose> key (and how to run `grep é /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose`), it is not a reason everybody should switch to this Microsoft idiocy.

@mcepl no one is forcing any one.First, there's nothing in this change that prevents you from using the compose key.Second, like it or not, but unicode input is something most *linux* applications support, and it's usually bound to control+shift+u. That includes both plain applications, as well as certain IME setups. All we're doing is changing the *default* key bindings to better match other applications.Nothing is preventing you from using the old shortcuts, if you prefer those.

@dnkl I know you are not forcing anything on me, and as I said I didn’t care that much about the particular shortcut. Just that adding in my opinion completely useless addition to what used to be ultra-simple terminal makes me sad.

@mcepl fwiw, the unicode input in foot adds very little code, and mostly re-uses what's already there.I intentionally kept it simple for this very reason. I could have added a custom visual mode etc, but opted not too, just to keep it as simple as possible. Now, if there's one feature in foot I'd be happy to strip away it's the CSDs. Just have to convince the GNOME guys to implement SSDs...

@dnkl Hmm, they seem to be going in the exactly opposite (and yes, I agree, wrong ) direction. https://blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/2018/01/26/csd-initiative/

@mcepl yeah, it's not going to happen, I'm sure. There's a pretty long (closed) issue on this on the mutter issue tracker. Lots of people wanting SSDs, but it still got rejected. They're not even implementing the Wayland protocol used to negotiate whether to use CSDs or SSDs. Which is perfectly fine, spec wise: it's an optional protocol and applications must use CSDs if the protocol isn't available. But it's a good indication on how invested they are in the CSD-only world.

@dnkl I didn’t know about this one, but it is probably one reasons why I subconsciously have a tendency to move to non-Gnome (and non-KDE) alternatives.

@dnkl This change is *much* for the better, thanks for listening to the reasoning in that issue and not the ney sayers who don't have a use case for it. I'm a big fan of the Compose key system but with three different languages and keyboard layouts in use plus doing font devel / typesetting work there are lots of times I have a Unicode value and just need to input it. Having the widely used locale and layout independent binding be the default was the right call.
