       This evening I was reminded of the Old River Control Structure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_River_Control_Structure , which I first learned about when I read John McPhee's _The Control of Nature_.Somewhere between that and living in a 67 year old house built on a slab on expansive clay soil, I started to realize that geotechnical and hydraulic engineering is *everywhere*, and most of us never even notice it.
