@rvawonk Outside of a handful of far-right or shitposting instances, I haven't seen disinformation nests since 2017.On my instance and in the federated timeline (which is linked to my instance too), I only saw individuals spreading disinfo around covid (the measures taken or the vaccination), but they never lasted long and never gained an audience.

Question for the crowd: What’s your general view on mis/disinformation and platform manipulation on Mastodon? Like, do you see it but think it’s not much of a problem? Do you think it *is* a problem? What types of mis/disinfo do you see? Tell me in the comments, please. (I’m mostly just curious about your experiences).

@rvawonk My biggest concern when it comes to that is that server admins force through their personal opinions by blocking entire instances they don't like. Often not even being transparent about it to the users of the instance. That is literal #censorship and while censorship on the big platforms is obv also very much a thing, you will never get censored because of something some other user has been writing.

@rvawonk Personally I'm on a private instance hosted by a well-established and trusted #Bitcoin dev and obviously we thus have mostly bitcoin developers as users, and our instance has been blocked by more than several instance admins because "they're against #crypto". 🤷

@rvawonk I don't see much of the overtly right-wing propaganda. What do I see are accounts spreading misinformation putatively from the left. It tends to be things like disingenuous attempts to equate the Democrats w Republicans ("both sides"), attempts to shift blame to Democrats for things Republicans have done, a bit of rage-baiting, etc. I tend to block them pretty quickly.

@leeolds @rvawonk If you've known politics outside of the US and you look not at narrative but at actual policy being enacted during either party's terms, I wouldn't say they're equal, but it's hard to deny they are both very much conservative and right-wing.

@stevenroose @rvawonk The huge irony is that everyone on fediverse seems to love #decentralization of their social media, but can't take the time to care about the same benefits for money.

@stevenroose @rvawonk (BTW, I block b-coin evangelists even faster than I block potentially disingenuous both-sidesers. It's just a personal thing.)

@rvawonk Any social network these days has been weaponized to spread misinformation. Mastodon is no exception.Speaking as a user, and as a moderator, I think Mastodon is a lot more difficult to infiltrate than others. The reason for this is twofold:1. Distributed moderation means misinformation will be detected quickly, and signaled from instance to instance: "user x is just repeating talking points". What follows is usually the suspension of the account.

@rvawonk 2. Mastodon was built on a core principle of being respectful of others. This usually means people will try to counteract disinformation with facts, politely. Or not so politely. This may paint a rosy picture of the reality, which is a lot messier, of course. But it seems to me disinformation, since it cannot be subtle (usually repeating the same lies again and again and again) is usually very challenged by a platform like Mastodon.

@ParadeGrotesque @rvawonk yes, PdG’s assessment seems about right to me. Most instances defederate from instances that allow a lot of mis/disinformation so users just aren’t exposed to as much of that crap.

@rvawonk Misinformation on #Mastodon is pretty much as bad as on every social media platform, but I've seen a lot less of what I call malinformation here than on the other platforms I've spent some time on.
