@jquillin Given the recent high profile failures of the Metaverse and NFTs, both of which the fashion industry was chasing hard, I don't think it's that surprising. What's seems interesting to me is that fashion doesn't seem to be leading advances in technology (as it has historically) but chasing them. This would explain why there's nothing to show - there's nothing in the pipeline, nothing being developed...

@Talia There actually are a number of brands and tech firms working on #web3, #nft, and #metaverse #innovation in #fashion. But it’s definitely not front-of-house runway worthy at the moment and none of it really touches haute couture. The PR may have cooled. But the development continues a pace, much more aligned with strategic business vision and goals. As a strategist, I think this is all good.

@jquillin Yeah, I get that. I don't know the history of couture at all, so I was really curious when that guy was talking about using tech in couture. I had never thought about it before. Also, are you aware of @nervous_jessica who has designed/made 3d printed dresses? She and her husband aren't doing that right now, but those dresses are pretty cool.

@jquillin @Talia As for #NFTs, how about the NFT you can’t sell - https://www.forbes.com/sites/stephaniehirschmiller/2023/06/07/unpacking-the-strategy-behind-louis-vuittons-39k-digital-treasure-trunk-nfts/ If #Fortnite qualifies as a #Metaverse, last month also saw a #Nike #EpicGames multi year collab bringing #NFTs to gaming. Might not be for everyone, nor the best strategy, but just like polka and accordions, probably not going away any time soon.

@jquillin I guess we have a different understanding of what ‘developing’ a technology means. I would not consider these examples of fashion firms developing technologies, but chasing or at best adopting them. I agree there are lots of brands who have sunk cash into NFTs and the Metaverse. I disagree that they will see strong returns on those bets anytime soon, if ever

@Talia @jquillin until there’s one unifying metaverse platform that can enable no-loss transitions and clear utility functions, it will remain in experimental phase. The real VR/AR tech blossom hasn’t happened yet. Everyone is still building and figuring things out, collecting data and insights in the process.

@miramusank @Talia Agreed. I would also argue that without solid content strategy in place no tech solutions will truly scale. Also we need more practical use cases than simply AR try on mirrors for sure.

@miramusank @jquillin I think there's been a real lack of focus on the customer in many of these pitches and experiments. What people actually want to do with these technologies seems less of a concern than how companies think they can sell them. But the pitch to the end customer doesn't seem to offer a new value proposition, just the same old ones. The killer app, so to speak, isn't yet in sight.

@Talia @jquillin there are still many missing puzzle pieces for me so I cannot say in any certainty. My lizard brain says IM TERRIFIED, though. The reddish flag is how digital twins are being marketed as “exciting” and not necessarily accompanied by how it will be used responsibly and safely.

@miramusank @jquillin Totally this. The amount of personal data required to realise such a concept is enormous. It _can't_ be anonymised. There's huge potential for all kinds of bad outcomes - from ID theft, data breaches, stalking, racist or other profiling... it could be all the bad stuff we see now, on steroids
