Hey, #climate and #ClimateAction people. Watching the mega-storm in North America, and putting some pieces together for myself... I'm wondering, where is the big journalistic book or long read that explains the connections between climate change, movement of the jet stream, and weather events like the one this week? I get the overall picture of increasing instability, but I'm wondering where the journalistic popular science piece is that connects the science to the events we're seeing

@jquillin Given the recent high profile failures of the Metaverse and NFTs, both of which the fashion industry was chasing hard, I don't think it's that surprising. What's seems interesting to me is that fashion doesn't seem to be leading advances in technology (as it has historically) but chasing them. This would explain why there's nothing to show - there's nothing in the pipeline, nothing being developed...

@jquillin I guess we have a different understanding of what ‘developing’ a technology means. I would not consider these examples of fashion firms developing technologies, but chasing or at best adopting them. I agree there are lots of brands who have sunk cash into NFTs and the Metaverse. I disagree that they will see strong returns on those bets anytime soon, if ever

@miramusank @jquillin I think there's been a real lack of focus on the customer in many of these pitches and experiments. What people actually want to do with these technologies seems less of a concern than how companies think they can sell them. But the pitch to the end customer doesn't seem to offer a new value proposition, just the same old ones. The killer app, so to speak, isn't yet in sight.

@miramusank @jquillin Totally this. The amount of personal data required to realise such a concept is enormous. It _can't_ be anonymised. There's huge potential for all kinds of bad outcomes - from ID theft, data breaches, stalking, racist or other profiling... it could be all the bad stuff we see now, on steroids

Interesting paper- AI is not boosting your creativity “We found that support from an AI image generator during ideation leads to higher fixation on an initial example. Participants who used AI produced fewer ideas, with less variety and lower originality compared to a baseline.”https://dl.acm.org/doi/full/10.1145/3613904.3642919

I am days away from publishing my first post-phd journal article. So excited - it has everything from suggestions of scammy incompetence by McKinsey to fairy tale allusions and a sneaky reference to the Human Centipede.

@futurebird @davidho totally this. the London Met Police genuinely don't seem to care about phone theft. It is easy to track where these things are going, it seems they just can't be bothered to do the work.

I’m reading Graham Greene for the first time and I’m hooked. The Ministry of Fear is set in WWII and the observation of people carrying on their everyday lives in the middle of the blitz is so rich and subtle. 2026 may be the year of bingeing Graham Greene#Books #bookstodon
