The more I look at it the less I'm sure there was a france to begin with. Even back when it was White it was way too multiethnic and multicultural to really generate national unity.Same goes for a lot of modern White countries tbh. They're not so much natural units based on ethno-nationalism as alliances of convenience cobbled together by some inbred aristocratic marriage.
