just learned that the people in the #Ardour DAW IRC channel generally tell people to NOT use the Calf plugin suite. they don't consider it to be very good.seeing as i wrote the compressor algorithm they use everywhere in that, and Calf is what you get in a lot of Google results when you search for Linux DAW plugins, that was quite a surprise.i told them what parts i did and why, but the channel went silent. i guess i'm evil according to them.

i was told to go to the #Ardour IRC channel for help with Ardour so i did, and since plugins were being discussed, i thought i'd mention that i contributed to some plugins once. but when the room responds with disdain and silence, i'm not going to be going there anymore. all conversation in that chatroom came to a complete halt after they learned that.from my perspective, this was code i contributed years ago, to a FOSS plugin suite that appeared to be the only plugin suite around at the time, and whose main developer was glad to receive some help, and me thinking that Linux audio needed a little help, so i wrote some code.contrast with the disdain and silence i was received with.it felt very French, actually, like a snub. isn't Ardour a French project? it kind of felt like being denied entry to a fancy club for wearing the wrong shoes.

@lore Ardour is not a French project. Calf are very buggy and crash hosts, phases issues, zipper noise sometimes with automations, etc...iirc, the development isn't active at this time... So many reasons to use another plugins, like lsp-plugins. Google results talks probably about some years ago. and thanks for French people...

@lore we go silent for all kinds of reasons. Could be lunch/dinner/a walk/a nap or .... actual work.Just wasn't much interest discussing CALF any further, nothing more.

@lore My stance is 100% "if it sounds good, it is good".Sure, the Calf stuff isn't perfect, and yes, YMMV. But the same has to be said for many commercial plugs. They're tools, and every tool has its use case.My 2c.
