For those of us who plan to federate with #Threads, we really need to do a better job of communicating to people that they will be able to interact with Threads from Mastodon, and that that is the superior choice. Some people here are getting Threads accounts, without realising it will soon be unnecessary. People on Twitter are pretty much in the dark about the whole thing.

@john @futurebird I wouldn’t say unnecessary… it’s fun to watch Threads evolve at this early time. I hope we see federation happen, but it may be months yet.

@jgordon @futurebird maybe so, but the danger is that people just get attached to those accounts, that isn’t what we want.

@john It's possible to get a Threads account that will only have posts explaining to people how to use free Fediverse servers instead.

@john for the majority of people it comes down to barrier of entry. Mastodon is inherently not as easy to start with as logging in with your existing Instagram account. Server selection, various apps, unclear terminology are all foreign info overloading for a lot of people.

@Jbquinn sure, it’s harder to get started. But there’s still a problem out there that people don’t know the basic facts. A lot of these people have (abandoned/underused) accounts here already, and don’t know they will be able to connect to Threads.

@john You’re absolutely right, and it speaks to the challenges with federation in general. Who should be the one to voice that? Arguably it should be the server maintainers and/or app developers for mastodon as it’s in their best interest to keep people using them, but they probably won’t in any coordinated way.

@Jbquinn and many of us disagree — just look at how many servers are preemptively blocking Threads. It’s the nature of the beast, and all we can do is try our best to help people get it.

@john I would argue that many severs blocking threads could be one driving factor for people leaving mastodon accounts. It sounds like either people don’t know they are able to connect with threads via mastodon, or they aren’t given the opportunity at all. I like it here, but this sounds like just a worse user experience all around.

@zleap @john Has Meta confirmed that Threads will actually federate? According to reports I've seen it will only be able to "export" a Threads account for import to a Mastodon/Fediverse account.

@axbom @zleap Yes, the head of Instagram has confirmed it: “Soon, you’ll be able to follow and interact with people on other fediverse platforms, such as Mastodon.” https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/05/adam-mosseri-says-metas-threads-app-wont-have-activitypub-support-at-launch/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAGU79423lt-KTyjQTs8UeQjABr6kC6unKIT8GkhIIpO2cTXJJLWQBOnqTm-3V5GCr7YRkbcnkteb8Og6Xx1SnYFLjn9o7EhYR99W5xQ8j0UT2aq32qZhhrKry-JkgL3_KtsGkeZoNxxSBdhsbBiLFmPuLqBJTmEg6wrpVjfpzWHk

@john @axbom I guess the main issue here is still privacy, one of the points of the article is that the fediverse respects privacy, Meta / Threads clearly does not, so while Threads can federate it by no means respects privacy. So any articles that cite Threads as being part of Fedi, neeed to be really really clear about this. Otherwise it could look bad on fedi, or give the wrong impression.

@john I'm not so sure about this. This is Zuck and Facebook (I refuse to call it Meta) we're talking about here. They launched unfederated. It seems to be taking off (30 million downloads in a day), they'll just keep it unfederated so they can mine all that sweet sweet data for themselves. I'm not counting on Threads being ported over to ActivityPub is about as likely as me selling you a beach house in Montana.

@teleskiguy what are you basing this on, given they have directly said they will support activitypub and are working on it (specifically on the moderation and ranking parts)? They aren’t federating to poach users, because there aren’t enough here for them to care.

@apophis @teleskiguy I don’t think that related, because Twitter doesn't have a protocol at all. I *think* the lawsuit is about trade secrets stuff that employees took from Twitter to Meta - which would mostly be backroom stuff you cant see. (It's almost certainly bullshit; I’m sure Instagram knows how to build this thing on their own.)I think the supporting ActivityPub is about avoiding monopoly and lock-in and monopoly concerns - and that will intensify as they get bigger.
