How long until #instances start blocking perfectly fine instances because they didn't block #meta ? How long until you stop seeing your friends on the #fediverse because they are "in the wrong instance" ? I personally think that segregation, gated communities, borders, walls are not good for the network itself, and that blocking should be an individual choice, not enforced by anyone. But to grok me you'd need to understand coercive groups & cults toxicity / group thinking drifts.

@rmdes To be fair, I know of people that are on Truth Social and/or Gab that are "in the wrong instance" and so aren't federated with other Fediverse instances....So how long until it happens? Negative several years.

There is a privacy concern.I don't want for data of my users to fall into Facebooks hands. It can trough reposts on those servers, that federate with FB.So, I must defederate them. It's so simple.@downey @rmdes

@Revertron do you also apply this to email, when you send an email to gmail/live/hotmail etc? When you add a contact on your phone, do you select your own self-hosted cal/dav server or you allow the contacts of your users/friends to be uploaded to un-privacy clouds ?

@Revertron @downey @rmdes All data on Fedi are public. Anyone can query the API afaik. Meta is getting to your toots whether your instance federates with then or not. So I don’t think defederaring achieves your goal of privacy.

@staticnoisexyz @Revertron @downey @rmdes Strongly agreed. Defederating does nothing at all to prevent Meta from scraping your user data. There may be plenty of reasons to defederate them, but this one is a non starter because it's based on a completely false premise.

@rmdes 100%. Establish your moderation rules and policies regarding who you're federating with based upon the content that the users of that instance generate/how that content is moderated. I'm all for blocking threads.net, but blocking everyone who doesn't block threads.net is some Mean Girls shit. "You can't sit at our table if you ever talk to THEM". And like ... if Them is literal fash or whatever, okay, maybe. But when Them is a shitty corp, but like, a very mainstream one that hundreds of millions of users use ...
