Prediction: after the fire sale of #Twitter, it’s new owners implement #ActivityPub, and bring it into the #Fediverse.

@john Why would there be new owners? The liabilities far outsrip the revenue potential. There is no value in the simple tech and scant user data. Who would be that dumb?

@john Meta is already talking about it with Threads. Embrace and Extend and Enshittify.

@hteasley I know, I just don’t think they are going to be able to do the last two Es.

@Sivavaid buying the name after bankruptcy? Honestly, someone is going to want Twitter.com. May as well run a Mastodon instance on it!

@john Don't be so sure... if Threads becomes the 95% of #ActivityPub population, they can do what they want and others will be pretty much forced to either adapt or lose users to Threads.

@john Well, that's the thing: they will make the non-extended ActivityPub pool much smaller, so that it will die. There's not much you can do about it, unfortunately.

@hteasley I do get the extend extinguish argument, I just don’t see a really see the path forward for such a strategy. If they add things that don’t follow thw standard, they simply won’t work (there’s no appetite here to follow their lead), if they try to extend the spec, they’ll have quite the fight. It’s possible, but I don’t see that we’ll be bled out by Threads, I think it’s more likely the other way around.

@hteasley I’ll ad to that, the non-thread Fediverse would have to shrink for that to happen, and I don’t see the mechanism. Most people that are here now will never join Threads.

@john The mechanism is that the Fed services grow as Threads grows, and users of Fed services enjoy access to their Threads friends. It becomes the norm. Then they extend ActivityPub in one or two good ways, and Fed services that don't go along will be essentially defederated. So they'll go along. Then when it is enshittified, Fed services will either tolerate it, or give it up, and find that the non-extended Fed is a lot smaller. And their users go to Threads, to keep what they have had.
