The head of Instagram, re #Threads said "We're committed to building support for #ActivityPub, the protocol behind Mastodon, into this app. We weren't able to finish it for launch given a number of complications that come along with a decentralized network, but it's coming."I don't believe it. #BlueSky isn't actually decentralized yet either. They will never be truly open like the #fediverse is. Look at all the good PR they've gotten for promising federation. Standard startup bullshit.

@wjmaggosI doubt they care about a couple of websites reporting on this. Most I read didn't have a clue about federation.

@ngmi so why do it? outside of PR, it can only be bad for their user retention and profits as I understand it.

@wjmaggos I'm supposed to believe that decentralized platforms are too complicated to figure out, but scooping up everyone's private data en masse is easy. Must be extremely hard for Meta to find Mastodon's source code to study how it works, all of it stashed somewhere on a phone without a Facebook app installed.

@wjmaggos @ngmi Because the new EU Digital Market Act requires big tech gatekeeper's (including Meta) messaging apps to interoperate with others. Either they comply or forgo access to EU's 500 million population.

@wjmaggos Well, that is remarkably unsurprising and yet also disappointing.

@Norobiik @ngmi the only explanation that makes sense to me right now.

@wjmaggos @ngmi @Norobiik did they choose a protocol for that interoperation?

@Wookhash @wjmaggos @ngmi As far as I know, the EU hasn't specified which protocol to use. But as far as I know there's only Activity Pub and Bluesky's ATP protocol - and ATP is still very much untested.A long time ago, there was an open communications protocol for messaging called XMPP which the Jabber client used. But I heard it died a slow death 🤷♂️
