Exactly. But the central onboarding process took way too long, and is still not really there. We could solve this problem easily with a newbie site supported by a “tax” on all the other instances in the mastodon pact. It’s a free entry portal, and users have to move on in 3 months, or pay a small fee to remain. Done. From: @kevinporterhttps://mastodon.social/@kevinporter@mastodon.online/110656478693282695

@shoq the mastodon app defaults to mastodon.social now which is a huge improvement. Other apps should do the same. Picking a server at the beginning of the signup process is a barrier to entry no matter how many people say it isn’t. It prevented me from joining for a few weeks because I just didn’t want to do it.

@kevinporter The tax would be based on number of users an instance has, and be adjusted each month to reflect traffic patterns. Thousands of smaller instances would pay maybe $15 month, and bigger instances, as much as $100. But this gives them access in order to promote their communities to the folks just off the bus. It’s a rational and practical solution to our largest collective problem.

@demvoter The problem with that model, as @atomicpoet has chronicled, is that the other admins find their sign-ups fall off dramatically. A newbie site that pushes them out after 3 months levels the playing field.

@shoq @demvoter @atomicpoet I feel like that'll be a hard sell until/unless Mastodon gets support for migrating posts.

@anthonytordillos @demvoter @atomicpoetCalckey already migrates entire accounts, and posts. Without the unworkable reposting required by other solutions. Mastodon simply has to respond in kind.
