Big tech platforms now make a big turn from 'free to use' to 'pay for everything now'And even if you don't pay directly on those platforms you will pay with your personal dataAPI's are now becoming a paid feature so many devs drop support for them since it's not doable anymoreI totally understand that things are need to be paid for at the end of the day but it also feels super toxic to see that "free-to-use" is almost become a no-go for themWhy so extreme.. 🙄

@stux The hunt for profit and monetization is really killing communities - however, it presents the opportunity for communites to explore other sites, or move back to the classical phpBB era

@stux Because Big-Tech is being run by Big-Finance. At the End of the day all that matters is shareholder value. That’s no longer true for twitter, but…. Elmo needs to recoup 44bn Dollares somehow…

@dustypaws I think you're right 😉 And with social media, it's just supppper hard to make moneyAs simple as that, if one put ads everywhere the users will flee, same with many premium features and stuff since there's so many alts out there

@stux well yes… but very broadly speaking (veery …) YouTube is social media too, and their Premium subscription really works, even in the EU which is unusual. But now you’re comparing Text and Video, or do you… I don’t know the answer, but I know that Elmo does not either. 😶

@stux I think the worst thing is, that even if you pay them, they _also_ spy on you and sell all your personal data.

https://techhub.social/@stux@mstdn.social/110650014205589955 Twitter was a friend of friend network. Friends of friend networks are small and sustainable. When Twitter became a million follower piece of crap in 2008 or so the costs exploded, and so they needed venture capital. They should have stayed small and sustainble, rather than becoming the bloated piecesof crap they became.

@stux the enshittification is inevitable. Once the platform is ‘built out’ - has reached the limit of eyeball gazes to farm - it can only increase profits by changes that make the platform worse, worse for the systems that evolved around and worse for the people who use it. More ads, use fees, rate limits. It is inevitable. The free model was always bullshit.

@stux i think there wouldn`t be so much anger about ads,if these were like in print media: silent and free of annoying animations or tracking ..

@stux imo shareholder pressure in a money crunch.. interest rates mean money isn't free anymore so everything gets more scrutinized

@stux That is not correct. They also sell the data of paying people. Selling data is basic income.

@stux A lot of big tech companies got their funding by promising investors that they will become profitable once they get a huge user base (i.e. "Growth first, profitability...eventually").Now that growth is slowing down and they can no longer borrow money at little/no interest anymore, they are scrambling to become genuinely profitable. Unfortunately for some tech companies, they never had a path to profitability.

@stux it's bizarre because i'm pretty sure the main reason they have so many users to begin with is because they provided it all free of charge

@stux the timing of it all is very suspect to me. Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube all clamped down within such a short span from one another.
