Goodbye Reddit, goodbye Hellbird, goodbye Facebook/Meta, and probably the next to go is Google. Is it the end of those services? No. But it is the end of their value to some of us.When the bottom line is cash and not a human-centered line, the result we have learned is that, quite frankly, revolt and leaving. And for good reason, too.Users are tired of being treated like robots, forced to sit through pointless ads, doomscrolling through troll posts - it just never ends. But it doesn't have to be this way. We can and will create alternatives if they don't already exist. People can wake up from this nightmare. In some fashion the nightmares might be recreated, depending on who is aligning with who, but for those who wish to put people first, the answer is usually almost always clear.Stop letting companies treat us and the planet like trash, stop letting governments trample over the rights of the least of us. We can fix things, we have to! Our generation is only one of many, from past generations who were also one of many. Every generation has to rise, revolt and regenerate the foundations of democracy. This is only the beginning of our stepping forward into the light. Keep fighting the good fight, and one day we'll all join each other in the sun.

@fuuma Google Search and Maps were the easiest to give up. DuckDuckGo and Apple have nice(r) alternatives. I already pay @fastmail and @protonmail for email, but I’ve kept my old Gmail accounts open and login every once in a while. Nothing important gets sent there. It’s going to be harder to find a Google Voice replacement (and I don’t think I can port my GV number). I’m hoping PeerTube catches on, or YouTube will be a tough one to leave.

@zachariah@mas.to Have you looked into JMP as an alternative to GV? https://jmp.chat (Not sponsored or affiliated! I don't even have an account with or use them. I just know about them and am /considering/ using them.)

@aj Looks promising. Two good signs: it’s based on Jabber and has an F-Droid app. Looks like you can use any Jabber client, so there are options in the App Store. I wonder if Google would let me transfer the GV number I’ve been using forever (hahahahahaha).

@zachariah@mas.to Yeah, I agree. The project looks really interesting. I just haven't had the time to think about whether or not I want my meager little server (an Intel NUC sitting behind my home internet service) to determine whether or not I am able to use SMS/MMS and make calls. It's already running so much of my digital life and is a single point of failure. I'd hate to miss an important call or be unable to contact emergency services because Calckey caused my server to lock up again, for example.Anyway, unless things have changed, the Googs should let your port your number out! I believe they may even be legally obligated to do so but I could be totally wrong about that (IANAL). I've had the same number forever. It has been ported into and eventually back out of GV. I do not recall if I had to pay a fee or not for that privilege, though.
