@misty If you export your archive, and you have a website, you could publish it as HTML (probably need a tool for this), and then put a link in your new Mastodon profile. That way the content lives on in a publicly-accessible archive. No need to involve your new instance.

@fuuma Google Search and Maps were the easiest to give up. DuckDuckGo and Apple have nice(r) alternatives. I already pay @fastmail and @protonmail for email, but I’ve kept my old Gmail accounts open and login every once in a while. Nothing important gets sent there. It’s going to be harder to find a Google Voice replacement (and I don’t think I can port my GV number). I’m hoping PeerTube catches on, or YouTube will be a tough one to leave.

@aj Looks promising. Two good signs: it’s based on Jabber and has an F-Droid app. Looks like you can use any Jabber client, so there are options in the App Store. I wonder if Google would let me transfer the GV number I’ve been using forever (hahahahahaha).

@pluralistic I left last year after 16 as a classroom teacher. Many factors involved, but one haunts me. Admin continually justified making teachers bend over backward to do “what’s best for students.”But when we went back to in-person instruction, district and building leadership did nothing to pushback against mask mandate bans. Nothing was done to protect the health of students.Their justification was baloney the whole time. My ability to care for students had been exploited.

@dave Nationalize the infrastructure. Do a public works project to get fiber to every home and business (like the electrification project). Let ISPs compete over services offered on those lines, or if they’re innovative enough they can compete (unsubsidized) with any new systems they create. This will protects neutrality more than regulation. But, yes, let’s do the regulation, too.
