RedHat closing the git, reddit being assholes, twitter going payforview, youtube forcing people to pay for premium. The hunt for "monetizing content" is really destroying the internet and the community that I am used to.I am happy that atleast software like Mastodon and the larger Fediverse is keeping the small but bright candle of hope alive.People will call me stupid, but I bet on fedi to succeed. And honestly, I dont think that metas entry to fedi will kill it - just make it grow.

@selea I hope that big hosters all over the world catch up the "wave" of #selfhosting and offer pre-made packages for federated services. In that way even inexperienced people could open their own instances.#Hetzner already did it with #Nextcloud and I'm pretty sure that others will follow. And then, the content belongs right where it should in the first place, to the creators.

@selea I also feel that way about meta but at the same time cautious that they won't attempt EEE

@mariskus I am having trouble seeing how they could perform an EEE on fedi, when it is much alive without it.It makes no sense for them to enter fedi at all. Either they have some long term ambitions that I dont understand at all, or I dont know. They should know that fedi will kill the connection if they dont behave.

@panigrc Cloudflare did something similar with their Wilderbeest (?) solution, but it has been very silent from their side (I think) regarding that.

@giffengrabber @selea Right now the biggest threat is Meta and, in extension, @Gargron being compliant and falling for their tactics like so many before. The FediPact is doing its thing, but losing two big instances would really suck.

@Natanox @giffengrabber @Gargron Are you seeing a mass migration towards the upcoming meta instance that treatens fedi?

@selea Doesn't effect me at all. Lesson is to set yourself up so your not as dependant on scummy groups. I don't use Redhat; Twitter; Reddit; and have ditched Youtube. I never trusted any of them before and never would have. I have zero sympathy for those who allow themselves to depend on scummy groups rather than use an alternative.

@selea @giffengrabber @Gargron Not mass migration, but the classic E-E-E tactics fully at play. Ploum wrote an excellent article about this. https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

@Natanox @giffengrabber @Gargron I did read that article a few weeks ago, and I may sound completely stupid when I say this, but I honestly dont think that google killed xmpp - it was never that big to begind with.It just SUCKED when they decided to stop "federating" with other servers.xmpp was and is a great protocol and service even without facebook and googles involvment.I would be very happy to be showed otherwhise. Even if I dont respond to everything, I do read everything.

@Natanox @giffengrabber @Gargron I'll probably be place on some block-list just because of this, because someone claims that I am a facebook-lover or something. But that far from the truth.I personally can't decide for all the people on this instance what the future action against facebook will be.I personally, would have preferred a more clear result. I will rerun the vote later and let the people here decide.

@selea @giffengrabber @Gargron That's a sensible approach. You have to keep in mind though that most users don't have the time nor want to take the time to inform themselves how corporate takeovers of OSS work or how the history behind it is. That's why those who're both empathetic *and* knowledgeable (or willing to become it) without a personal agenda are the best admins.Meta has a clear agenda: making more money. And they've proven time and time again they'll do anything to make more of it.

@selea monetization and revenues generation is not the common denominator here that you are looking for. It is the number priority, goal, mission and vision for these companies: generating profits. If an organisation is profit-driven, it can't sustainably become people-driven. Call it enshittification, or whatever you like, but it is all the same pattern: capital first, people second.

@seleaSame here, I am relieing on open source software whereever I can and I know why. But not all of my friends do yet. It is interesting that you can't use youtube without an addblocker anymore.Meta is a reasonably moderated system, I would not use it on my own but it is ok to interact, in theory, as long as they are not doing strange things. We have to monitor metas steps and complain if neccessary. a block can be none very quickly no need to make that in adcance.

@selea I was hoping Brave Browser's BAT would close the gap between ad-infested websites and useful stuff (like this instance) which could get money from users. Still not there and losing my faith. Anyway, where's the donate link for this instance?
