My top three tips for beginners on Mastodon:1. Add a profile picture. 2. Follow many people. You need to follow hundreds to get a lively timeline. And in the meantime use the local and federated timelines to find interesting stuff. 3. Don't use the official Mastodon app. There are much better third-party alternatives.

@anderspuck cosign all of this 100%. My timeline didn't start to be worthwhile until I got to ~ 250 people followed. Didn't start to get really good until I was at 400+

@anderspuck Actually I feel like you can follow too many accounts. My timeline is impossible to follow because there’s no filtering. I’m hoping client side improvements will be made here, over time.

@anderspuck because it tried to lure all new users into that instance - and IMHO I think the smaller instances are what makes Mastodon special. So if a new user ends up automatically at mastodon.social (s)he will miss much and likely disappear soon again.

@panda I think that most new users will get the best experience on one of the big servers. This is because of the way federation works, where smaller servers have fewer connections, and it requires some understanding of the system to find people to follow. (This comes from someone who runs his own small server.)
