Lastly I'm a benevolent dictator of my instances (I really should update my descriptions to reflect that).Being BDFL means you can't piss off your users that much, they aren't serfs that are tied to your land they can just leave if they don't like you or your policies.I don't have to listen or implement request even if they are popular among my users if I think they are unsafe or will be detrimental to the instance. Doesn't mean I don't listen to them.If that sounds authoritarian, it's because it is but It's not in the "The King commands you to work the fields for 10 years to earn your freedom" but more in the "You are in my house, I paid for the carpets, please don't shit on them."This is basically how every fediverse instance is ran, even if an instance says that it is "community ran" like ours. Instances that take donations probably give preferable treatment to donors, it's just how it works. I don't take donations because I don't want to feel obligated to donors.I've yet to actually see a democratically ran instance, talk to me when democracy.town actually allows its users to democratically vote on the instance rules and deferations. I believe @parker had an idea like that for monarchy.town, and I think an instance like that would be funny.

@splitshockvirus @parker Don’t be fooled by the King’s propaganda, SSV rules with a iron fist, he says jump and starnix gets froggy.

@splitshockvirus Parker's new account is @parker. Might as well let him know while I'm here that this is my most active account as well (for now).

@splitshockvirus @parker Yeah, I think something like a membership-based DAO would be neat, so that the voting record would be permanent and couldn't be manipulated, but anything blockchain-based still isn't very accessible.

@parker @splitshockvirus @parker You don't need a blockchain for that, just use a hashmap like a normal person.

@colinsmatt11 @parker @splitshockvirus Yeah, there's not much need for it to be overly fancy.

Social.coop use a Loomio group to run their service democratically. No smart contract DAO malarkey required. @parker@pl.psion.co@parker@leafposter.club @splitshockvirus

@splitshockvirusLoomio isn't federated (yet). I spent some time arguing for this a few years ago, but it wasn't a priority for the co-op who develop the software. But it's AGPL, so if someone else thought about the UX and wrote a good patch, they might be willing to merge it. Especially now that Mastodon is getting mainstream attention.@parker@pl.psion.co @parker@leafposter.club

@strypey Imo it not being federated is not a downside. I do appreciate you making me aware of it. The co-op that you linked aeems to be civil enough and structured as to not look like they are larping as anarchists. So I potentially am wrong about them.Provided that people are understanding of what a coop is it possible could be done to some success, but it requirea mutual effort. The last part is a difficult thing to source.@parker@pl.psion.co @parker@leafposter.club

@splitshockvirus> it not being federated is not a downsideIt's not a showstopper, and yes, the Loomio co-op (and the Enspiral network it's part of) are cool people doing good work. But federation would allow people to join groups on Loomio.org from a community-hosted instance, or vice-versa. Which would help ensure that people and groups stay on the flagship platform because it serves them well, rather than because it's that or isolation ("like-in not lock-in").@parker@pl.psion.co @parker@leafposter.club

@strypey @splitshockvirus@mstdn.starnix.network @parker@leafposter.club making a federated decision software is kinda my main interest.

@risottobias> making a federated decision software is kinda my main interestLoomio has a fantastic UX, and a federated version would be even better. It integrates pretty well with email, so maybe the functionality could be built off that? I think their stack is still Ruby-on-Rails, but it's been a while since I checked in with the devs...
