I have successfully got my pfSense talking to the internet via PPPoE! It only cost half my brain cells.

ordering an ATA because my grandad needs his phones but the ISP router refuses to talk to the internet via IP on any of its ports$40 isn't bad tbh

honestly the idea of an ATA is kind of neat."this is a tiny SIP client that lets you use old analog phones via VOIP."

@silhouette it's one thing to have PPPoE with VDSL because like, of course it's going to be assbut when it's PPPoE over fibre, what the fuck is wrong with you

@silhouette as far as I can tell, ISPs simply want users to suffer

did I mention I had to break into the modem to get it to give me the VDSL password so I could connect pfSense to it? :blobcatdead:

@izaya if you're brave, you can connect an ATA to a house with disconnected phone lines to make all the ports go "live" again

@izaya at my house, I have fiber for internet so I could safely cut the phone line to my basement. Then I have an ATA in the dining room which makes the ports in my living room, kitchen, and office all work again :]

@izaya I needed more ports than my ATA could accommodate for my phone, and fax machine- then I got extra ports as a trade off!

@lispi314 known, not new workthis device has a secret superuser account with credentials derived from the serial number and MAC address that you need if you want to backup the config file, which you can then decrypt with keys extracted via reverse engineering the firmware, and finally you then decrypt the passwords as stored in the plain text config file so you can connect to PPPoE with another device
