After considering both positions, I made up my mind on the Red Hat situation. While they are probably allowed to do what they’re doing right now, I still feel that not only is it unethical, but it also will harm the entire Linux ecosystem when their business drops in response to their last move, first among hobbyists, and then at the companies these work for. Here are my thoughts, in a more informal video than usual:https://youtu.be/GiTTihPxlqE

@thelinuxEXP I agree, crushing downstreams is bad and totally against what Open Source is supposed to be. Maybe I am too mean, but I do hope that this is the end of RHEL. Nobody thought OpenOffice would or could die, but it did.

@thornax I will probably move out. Can’t support a product that helps Ref Hat down the line.

@thelinuxEXP @thornax Are you moving to SUSE? Ubuntu? Debian?

@AmyIsCoolz @thornax Either Tumbleweed or Nix, I think. My servers were already on Ubuntu or Debian, so they’re good!

@thelinuxEXP this doesn't seem as well researched as your usual content. The is more nuance to this than "you're taking away our clones" and "what will the hobbyists use".there's been some good blogs by redhatters and former redhatters that have spoken on this topic better than RH themselves and provides a better view than "the sky is falling" we get from the clone cult on reddit and the like

@gnuplusmatt It’s not meant to be a research piece, it’s an opinion / reaction, as explained in the video.

@thelinuxEXP I'm suggesting your opinion has been drawn on a narrow canvas, which you're more than entitled to do. But I am suggesting that is unlike your usual work.

@gnuplusmatt Yes, as I said, it is not a usual video. And I feel I’ve taken into consideration all aspects and information available , and arrived at my own conclusion. Whether you like it or not is entirely up to you!The gist of it is: whether the clones do anything or value or not is irrelevant. Ther existence is the byproduct of FOSS, just like Red Hat is. Trying to make their life harder is a mistake and goes against FOSS. That’s it.

@gnuplusmatt I’ll also add that I personally don’t find value in these clones. You can get RHEL for free with a free account. I don’t see the point of the clones. But that’s irrelevant. The licences that make Red Hat possible also make these clones possible. Either Red Hat fins a way to make their service compelling to clone users, or they don’t, but trying to muffle the competition by potentially violating the GPL isn’t the way.
