Blocking other instances because they won’t block X or Y is childishPlease worry about the blocks on your own instance and don’t force them onto others. That’s why they chose to run their server and not join yours😘As user you can block individual people and even complete domains(instances). Instance admins/mods can do the same on instance level. That should be enough to moderate content you’ll seeBut for the love of cats, stop with dictating terms to other instances..

The sole fact that they're not building a wall with another house doesn't mean that they're supporting such ideology. They can have ideology of their own and respect others freedom if others don't infringe on someone else's freedom. They can even argue and actively disagree with such "bad neighbor".

@stux In the context of the potential for #meta to join the fediverse, I agree with you. I run my own instance (with basically just me on it) for this reason.I think admins should be able to do whatever they want, but my stance is that they shouldn't de-federate a domain unless it's causing active harm to their server. Let the users pick who they see.

I'm sure some people will behave childish, somebody is always doing so somewhere.But the basic discussion isn't childish or enforcing, I think. It's about people trying to protect themselves and the Fediverse as a whole from a company that's got opposite goals.I think defederating from instances that federate with Meta is important, not to punish or to force them to do whatever, but to protect ourselves from Meta.

@stux Blocking other instances for whatever reason you want to block them is the very core of federation. You blocked a server the other day in a fit of pique. It’s not the kind of behaviour I’d want from a mod on my server, but you’re not a mod on my server.

@stux that depends a lot on what the "other instance" won't block. an instance that refuses to defederate anything regardless of reason is the fedi equivalent of a tor exit node. you're still responsible for spreading (and caching) illegal content even if that content didn't originate from your instance, so I don't blame any #mastoadmin that is skeptical towards the negligence of non-moderated instances and chooses to block them entirely.

@stux I love the spirit, but this is essentially asking activists to stop doing activism, right? This specific thing is a reasonable thing to suggest people stop doing, but I would absolutely expect certain people to continue because doing things like that is core to who they are.
