       1936, the NetherlandsThese are probably made in a province called Drenthe where you had Veen (peat) colonies for the poor and undesirable of the cities. they are 'turfstekers' Peatstabbers, they stabbed then cut peat for drying it and then using as fuel sold, kinda a product like coal but less efficient and more organic still.

       @stux Je hoeft niet ver terug de tijd in om "19e eeuwse" praktijken tegen te komen in Nederland. Het dorp waar ik ben opgegroeid werd pas in de jaren '70 ontsloten, en kreeg ook toen pas riolering... Maar alleen in de Dorpsstraat! Alle andere woningen moesten nog gewoon de boodschap doen in een hokje dat boven de sloot hing.Nederland is echt heel snel veranderd.
