My response to Lisa Siraganian "On Accidental and Parasitic Language" on the Critical Inquiry forum is up. Her position statement is clear and inviting. I disagree with her. I do regret the bit of overconfidence and snark in my answer. It comes from a mix of respect + joy. Promise. I'll see myself to the door if y'all think I'm being disrespectful. https://critinq.wordpress.com/2023/06/26/on-accidental-and-parasitic-language/

@elotroalex I see no disrespect. Plus, I agree that there is a collapse between language and communicationin her position-- but that was also present in the original "Against Theory" text, so nothing new there.

@jose_eduardo that is a relief to hear. I don't most of these people. I'll reserve all my snark and overconfidence for @TedUnderwood. He can take it

@elotroalex @TedUnderwood yes, especially because we know he will answer your snark with tweets full of intentionless meaning. Too bad he abandoned Mastodon. We still have his tweets though, produced by the mechanical operation of the waves on the metaphorical Mastodon sand.

@jose_eduardo @elotroalex Okay, okay — I’ll engage the CI thing on Mastodon! Probably better venue for this anyway. I’m only lured back to Twitter because the tech industry didn’t leave.

@TedUnderwood @elotroalex Let's begin by acknowledging that reading "Against Theory" in relation to LLMs feels anachronistic.I am sure Michaels is happy we are paying attention to that text again, but the fact is that it was written as an attack at the deManian "undecidability" of the txt, as a conservative desire to go back to belief and intention, a reaction to the fear of a postmodern world view (the 80s/90s) taking over.
