@how @nightpool @lightone @smallcircles Do you think it would be worth having a category on SocialHub for discussions about funding? Both about funding for software/protocol dev (grants like SoC, NlNet, POSE etc), and about how to sustainably fund instances, the ethics and practicality of different revenue models etc?#fediverse #funding

@strypey> separate forum for fediverse fundingApologies if you intended it to be a "public DM".Might the explicit use of the word funding put off people? If money is incidental in practice, maybe an existing or new forum for community which organically discusses funding?

@tetrislife> Apologies if you intended it to be a "public DM"Just tagging in some people who are or have been involved in SH admin. I was going to post this on SH, then thought this is a better place for casual meta.

@strypey @how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife Here's a collection of resources: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/grants-and-funding-for-our-projects/86There's also https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/grants-and-funding-for-community-stuff/87Note that these never picked up any real popularity. I made edits in the first wiki.Every not directly technical subject area is a challenge on SocialHub. The member base is just not all that interested. And if you attract other people that are into that, you'll be full-time engaged in encouraging activity to take place. It's sad, but as it is.

@smallcircles> if you attract other people that are into that, you'll be full-time engaged in encouraging activity to take placeIs that why the Social Coding forum was set up separately? Without wanting to pour cold water on these efforts, I note that this also seems to be struggling to attract much participation. The Feneas forum - and Feneas in general - also struck this problem.(1/2)@how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife

@smallcirclesI think part of the solution is to clearly express what sorts of outputs we're aiming for. So people have confidence that they're not just pouring their time and creativity into black holes.(2/2)@how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife

@strypey @how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife Well, SocialHub being separate and needing an account doesn't help. But this isn't the main reason. Whenever scope gets too broad a community gets significantly harder to turn into a 'Community of Action' imho. Now when it comes to discussing technical aspects wrt improving the fedi, the SocialHub has offered real value, and is still doing so even only as just-a-forum / do-ocracy.

@strypey @how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife For every participation there should incentives to participate too, which is quite important in grassroots settings with people having plenty of choices, own interests and passions, info overload vying for their attention and little time to spend.

@strypey @how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife > I think part of the solution is to clearly express what sorts of outputs we're aiming for. So here is where it starts.. who specifies that clearly? The facilitator. And the more audiences you have, the higher the burden this becomes. This increases quickly. And also the act of facilitating means that other people are comfortable to 'lean back' until the work is done for them.It is tricky.

Take the Social Coding forum as an example. Can you tell me in one Mastodon post - 5 sentences or less - what outcomes you hope to produce if enough people put time into it?@how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife

@strypey @how @nightpool @lightone @tetrislife Social Coding isn't a good example. The intention here is to start a movement, and really think about what that entails.Hence an 'official' launch of the initiative has been postponed, maybe indefinitely.Instead a different approach is taken based on an inherent focus on sustainability in grassroots ecosystems. This hasn't yet crystalized and whether it is successful only the future can tell :)
