man, none of the EFI partitions for macOS look like VirtualBox would be able to boot them. i'm tempted to just install OpenCore since it comes with something that looks like a normal EFI boot loader.

well, i found a boot.efi file in my install eventually, and could see some kernel boot messages, but it appears to have rebooted in the middle of it, and is back at the UEFI boot shell again. based on what i'm finding when i start googling this specific issue, getting macOS to boot in VirtualBox is going to be a lot more complex than the how-to guides make it out to be.

i'm beginning to lean toward just firing up the MBP again and dumping all the files i can over the network until the batteries run out. they're inflated but macOS tells me they're fully charged. discharging those batteries is probably a good idea anyway.

@lore I think that I read Macs expect a different partition format for their ESP partition, HFS+. (See top inset on https://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/principles.html)That's not what you're running into is it?
