Does anyone in the southern US or a similar climate grow oyster mushrooms? I bought some at a farmers market the other day from a guy who grows them in a greenhouse. They're delicious but expensive. I would like to try growing some, am going to research it. #Gardening #FoodGardeners #Mushrooms

@Jennifer_Pinkley I grew them in the southeast, Appalachian region. This was once upon a time, but they grew well on straw. I had one of those starter kits from online. You do have to keep an eye for contaminants bc the area is so humid though

@trouble thanks! I have sunny spots and also woods, what would be better? So I got a mushroom kit a few years ago but it was for inside and was just for two batches. Do they keep going outside after getting them started?

@Jennifer_Pinkley @trouble Do a YouTube search on oyster mushroom bed. Basically, layering straw/substrate and spawn and keeping it moist. For that reason, a shaded area is usually best. You can use spent kits as spawn with some success, although some find they aren’t as vigorous as fresh spawn. If you’re going to the trouble of making a bed, might as well invest in some spawn too.

@pdiff1 @Jennifer_Pinkley @trouble I help grow oysters and hericiums indoors. Getting a small production setup isn't too terribly involved, and is rather scaliable, both up and down, Soy and hardwood pellets, water, cleanliness, and patience. Using the used substraight yields mushrooms, usually, but not always. But when they grow, they grow on their own. And they usually spike right after a good rain. But be ready to pick before the next rain or 90* sunny day.
