@waotzi having the source doesn't protect a trusting trust attack, but it does at least make it possible to read the code (nobody does, but you could!) and build your own. so idk.

@waotzi i have a feeling prism probably runs more off basic ass psychology where google et all just secretly dump the backups on their end more than relying on anything clever.

right, but why should i suddently fully trust google when they are known to be part of prism? just because they contribute to llvm and linux

no clue how deep the spying is ,thats why i wanted to know more. in theory the binary blobs in firmware could be used for spying.. thats what i would to know more about, but they didnt want to have that discussion

@waotzi they could be, it's just worth noting that a lot of telco stuff the backdoor isn't even hidden. they have to put it in there (called CALEA) and there's just a button that turns on whatever monitoring system there is.the amount of E2E crypto is very low. they just have to gatekeep crypto out of the big platforms (which they do, successfully, also see CISA where the FBI regularly shows up to threaten Zuck with the latest narrative enforcement orders) so they get to scoop most all of it without really needing serious oceans eleven bullshit.

@icedquinn @waotzi What do you think about the old Intel management engine whistleblower stuff from years ago? It seems that if you have a western computer, all of its Io and results are being kept for replay and analysis.

@jazzilla @waotzi i'm not a spook but most of the time when there is a big reveal about spooks and spook abuse its very rarely anything super shadowrun/heist film and tends to be something abjectly stupid like the password to the website was the name of the website.i mean it could just be parallel reconstruction so idk

@jazzilla @waotzi to be fair the interviews with red/blue teams in private pen testing have the same stories as a lot of leaks do. people are just dumb and its always easier for a well established group to play the people than it is to burn your zero days.

i think whats concerning is that the possibility is out there and minix auto updates, would just need a new spyware update...definitly will invest in a device with libreboot next time
