This summer, I've cycled 2,750 miles across the US 🚲 I'm on a coast-to-coast trip -- 3,700 miles total -- as research for my next book, on micromobility 📖 One question I get a lot: "What gear did you get for such a long ride?"My essay explaining the kit, here: https://medium.com/@clivethompson/my-gear-for-cycling-coast-to-coast-53bf8111e6cbA "friend" link in case you're not a subscriber to Medium: https://clivethompson.medium.com/my-gear-for-cycling-coast-to-coast-53bf8111e6cb?sk=b5755baa2b144b298b6865948ff2d9ee

@mark_l_thompson Yep: Bike is 28 pounds, front panniers are about 8.5 pounds each, back panniers about 11 pounds each -- so, 37 pounds in panniers total. The weight of the food bag fluctuates a lot but let's make it another 8; I typically carry three 24 ounce bottles of water, which is another 45 poundsSo, 28 + 37 + 8 + 4.5 = 77.5 poundsIt's pretty heavy!

@clive Really enjoyed this post... I've been looking for the holy grail of bike shoes that you can walk normally in. I don't think I need (or want) water proof though. I'm still using toe clips so sooner or later I need to let them go.I'm not planning on a trek - but always good to read about gear!I had a Brooks saddle once - I don't think I ever got it to really break-in sadly. Now I have a Terry Liberator saddle that has served me well for many years. https://www.terrybicycles.com/saddles/mens-saddles

@clive McMinnville, about 50mi away from Lincoln City or Pacific City, depending on where you want to finish off at the ocean (I know a lot of people head up 26 to Seaside, I think that's the main route). The route to Pacific City via Carlton is totally amazing and I'd be happy to ride it with ya.

@clive @anildash have you seen https://usa.streetsblog.org/2023/06/12/opinion-why-we-should-stop-using-the-term-micromobility - and would you consider not calling it *micro*-mobility? There's nothing *micro* about traveling thousands of miles. It's just regular mobility.

@clive Awesome post! Next summer I am doing Chicago to DC, I can’t wait. Thanks for the detailed breakdown. Im still on the fence about a dedicated GPS unit vs my phone. I have a dynamo so Im not so worried about power, but my last tour Komoot just wasn’t cutting it on my phone.

@clive we got told constantly by other cyclists that we were doing it wrong, didn't have right bikes or gear. I kept thinking of the people that did cross country on pennyfarthings. surely anything we have now is better than that. Our 4 person tent for two people and out lack of clips ons was what stuck in their craw the most.

@csolisr heh heh yeahMy recommendation is consider getting an ebike from a reputable dealer! The motor takes away the pain of hills, leaving one with just the fun parts 😀 You can pedal as much or as little as you want ... studies find that people get nearly as much exercise as folks on regular bikesI've ridden them, and honestly there are delightful

@cpeak I don't think a dedicated GPS is crucial -- Google maps works very wellI just like it for the terrain warnings, and so I don't drain my phone battery while riding
