Long ago, I experimented with LSD and whenever I've described the experience. people don't really relate, but I haven't had a chance to discuss the experience with autistics.I recently read a paper about autistics having extra synapses, and this got me thinking about my experience with psychedelics, which greatly exaggerated my tendency to see connections between seemingly unrelated things.Thoughts?@actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics

@TheAutisticTooter @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics I don't have much experience with psychedelics, but I did tend to connect patterns that weren't obvious with an unaltered consciousness, though I could still see the connections after I came down. I do this with cannabis too. I like it because when I'm stoned I get the vibrant, visual imagination I had as a kid back, and patterns light up like neon. It takes my sober brain to sort out what patterns are significant vs interesting coincidence

@TheAutisticTooter @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics I want to add a quick disclaimer here for anyone reading: I had positive experiences, but I was in a safe, controlled space with a sober trip-sitter who I trust completely. I heard stories about how traumatic a bad trip can be, so I feel the need to state for the record that curiosity should come with caution. Don't try this unless you feel 100% secure with the place and the people around you. Also, hydrate!!

I agree with everything @Vincarsi says here and being mindful of "set and setting". This has long been part of good usage advice for entheogens (my preferred term for "psychedelics"). Indeed, it's good advice for mind-alteration experiments of any kind (meditation retreats etc).But...@TheAutisticTooter @jpaskaruk@actuallyautistic

@Vincarsi > I heard stories about how traumatic a bad trip can be... it's my strong belief that "bad trips" are mainly caused by people trying to get off the rollercoaster in the middle of the ride, and being freaked out that they can't. The one piece of advice I'd give anyone taking entheogens is to only do it when you're sure you ready to *surrender* to the experience, and roll with the coaster. I've taken many different entheogens, dozens of times over about 25 years, and in many different settings. I've never had what I'd call a "bad trip". That's not to say it's always been unicorns and rainbows. It hasn't. I've definitely had challenging experiences, sometimes even profoundly uncomfortable ones. But I've always found that if I relax into them, they soon transform, and I believe *that* is where the healing happens.(3/3)@Vincarsi @TheAutisticTooter @jpaskaruk @actuallyautistic

@strypey @TheAutisticTooter @jpaskaruk @actuallyautistic I think you're right, I would just semantically nitpick that the fact that a bad trip is preventable if you know how to navigate it doesn't make it not a "bad trip"If I took someone up a mountain and didn't tell them we were coming back, and they spent the whole time terrified because of it, even if we got back safely, even if there was never any real danger, that person's subjective but still valid experience was "bad"But we agree

@Vincarsi> the fact that a bad trip is preventable if you know how to navigate it doesn't make it not a "bad trip"Well, to nitpick your nitpick, if a bad trip is prevented, then logically it's not a bad trip. But I take your point. And yes, we absolutely agree that having the right guidance before (and ideally during) any entheogenic experience is critically important to replacing a "bad trip" with a profoundly healing transformation.(1/2)@TheAutisticTooter @jpaskaruk @actuallyautistic

@VincarsiEgo death is not comfortable. Nor can we expect it to be. The ego will do everything to convince you that its death is your death. Anyone who's spent any significant period of time in meditation practices knows exactly what I mean, even if they've never taken a single entheogen.(2/2)@TheAutisticTooter @jpaskaruk @actuallyautistic

@VincarsiIt comes down to how we define "bad trip". I'd say it's a traumatising experience that reinforces past trauma and the ego structures that hold it in place, instead of dissolving them. When people feel scared of tripping again in the future, that's usually what's happened.(3/2 yeah I know ;)@TheAutisticTooter @jpaskaruk @actuallyautistic

Think about how the vast majority of computer problems are caused by rebooting them. An entheogenic experience is like a reboot for your consciousness. But like a reboot, it can lead to a kernel panic ;) @Vincarsi@TheAutisticTooter @jpaskaruk
