@zeh It’s not quite accurate: she’s accused not of “rescuing people” but of assisting human traffickers. Which makes a lot of sense, when you start wondering why a “rescue” ship would sail right to the coast of Libya, pick up people from the boats and taxi them hundreds of kilometers north and then dump them - with passports taken away - in Italian towns where they will be employed in brothels.https://www.reuters.com/article/us-europe-migrants-italy-ngo/italy-seizes-ngo-rescue-boat-for-allegedly-aiding-illegal-migration-idUSKBN1AI21B

@lispi314Brothels, or more generally, grey economy, is the main place of employment for illegal immigrants. Organized crime sets them up in such position intentionally, by taking away their passports and inventing a "debt" they have to pay back. Men do unpaid work at farms, women in prostitution, all that is run by mafia who obviously also controls the supply of workers from Africa, and very likely also the taxi service through Mediterranean sea.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/...@zeh

@kravietzNo. It doesn't make any sense. Saving people from drowning, at sea, is not 'helping traffickers'. It's saving people. You know what really helps traffickers and mafia? Borders. Building walls and 'security' surveillance apparatus to use against poor people is actual good clean business. Funny how that's not prosecuted, how that won't make you face 20 years in jail.https://www.vice.com/en/article/k7873m/how-the-dollar68-billion-border-surveillance-industrial-complex-affects-us-all@lispi314

@zehIf you deny the very idea of borders between countries then I respect this idealism. As long as it's idealist utopia, I'm happy to support it and contribute to it by making better social institutions. One should however realize that abolishment of borders in the real world doesn't mean that Putins, Khomeinis and Assads of the world will more happily accept social values that helped make EU successful societies. Quite the opposite, abolishment of borders for them will be a signal to come and impose their rules on you.@lispi314

@kravietz If you'd read closer, you'd realized that i replied to your point. I denied that saving people is 'helping traffickers' and pointed to the fact that this murderous system of restricting people's movement is what actually enables the multiple ways that poor people are exploited. I pointed out that if the goal is really to stop human trafficking then the machine that enables it should be stopped. @lispi314

@kravietzYou, on the other hand, keep deviating from the original point and replying with other frames (human traffickers and dictatorships). It's disingenuous rhetoric and discourse tactics to win, not to learn together or have a discussion. Enough. @lispi314

@zehI don't disagree with that, but my very point is that different people have different ideas about how society should work. One says everyone should have equal rights, the other says some people are "made" to serve others. And they are willing to impose these ideas on other by force, the latter in principle more than the former. If someone wants to impose their ideas for life on you, you have two choices: either enforce your values on them (say, war in Afghanistan), or isolate from them (borders). One thing you can't do is to build your successful society in isolation.@lispi314
