Don’t kid yourself. “Artificial intelligence“ is just Big Tech’s way of saying “hey, it’s not our fault. It’s the machine’s!“ In point of fact, every malign use of “AI“ is really just some human-composed algorithm doing something that maximizes profit at the expense of people. We must not let these companies off the hook. They’re in charge. Not the machine. Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

But where do we draw the line, Leo? Was it also evil to progress technology to the point where we no longer needed entire rooms full of women using typewriters or mundane doing data entry tasks? That also put a ton of people out of work.

@leo As a 'best excuse' type of response to that accusation, the "AI" might produce something that wasn't _designed_ to align with a conventional algorithm (for profit or control). That could easily be what we've seen being produced.But, like so much in tech, we are seeing this work in progress. If the output from AI ISN'T aligning with the intent for profit or control, that is the goal that they will be aimed at and achieved in due course.

@leo Not just companies - also governments. Algorithms that nobody understands (and are in any event protected as trade secrets) but can be demonstrated to show, for example but not limited to, racial bias used for sentencing guidelines. Algorithms that are known not to work acceptably well on persons of color used to recognize faces and issue arrest warrants that are then executed without the slightest bit of human judgement applied. It's gone off the rails just like we were warned it would but it's supposed to be nobody's fault. And it's ruining lives every day.

@leo The thing that gets me is the double-standard. For example Google was touting Bard's ability to generate code! How useful! Behind the scenes, they have an internal memo *not* to use Bard for coding. They know the truth and are trying to hide it from the public.

@leo Preach! We're seeing the "paperclip problem" play out digitally. Instead of physical paperclips, they told the machines "maximize the profits". The algorithms figured out that it's much easier to extract money from people who are perpetually distracted and anxious.

@leo This is more true than I wish it were. The core issue there ain't artificial intelligence. It's avoiding any responsbility. You're more at risk from me, or the law, if your dog bites me, than you are if your #AI wipes out, oh, my medical records, my data, my bank account, or maybe when the drone blows up my garage. Because, you know, shrug, AI, who knew it was gonna go Borneo and turn into #Skynet?
