@Lyude We solved this problem in 1981 with SMTP. The problem is that the UIs are all designed after writing a letter instead of having a conversation. I want to create a new SMTP header called “Display-As: chat” that tells an email client to show a message in a conversation view. No subject, no CC or BCC, no formatting, no quoted replies, no cruft.

@Lyude I also want to create a mobile app that uses IMAP and SMTP to give you a messenger like UI for whatever email provider you use. Does that sound like something you’d use?

@hperrin @Lyude mail sucks, most people use one provider, attachments are heavily size-restricted, reception can fail for a myriad of reasons, and patching with new UIs still leaves you with a weird inbox to look at and manage

@talon @Lyude And what’s awesome about Delta Chat and what the engineers there have done is that any messenger I make that follows their protocol would be not only completely compatible with their messenger app, but also backwards compatible with all the plain old email apps like Gmail.

@briellebouquet @Lyude just an IRC server with a bit of history.Originally it was FreeNode which was *the* place to host a channel on if you were a software project. Then some weird hostile takeover happened by an entitled rich boy acting like a certain Elon telling people this is just how it's going to be, and everyone just said "nope" and left him there all alone with his toy to start Libera Chat instead.And here we are!
