What I find pretty odd about #Fediverse stuff is that I can reply to a #PeerTube video in #Mastodon but I can't reply on PeerTube using my Mastodon account.

Anyway, tech stuff aside, I went for a #Squeeze :squeeze: massage this morning and I'm pretty sure I fell asleep on the massage table. 💆 💤

@matt Because you don't have an account on PT. You can't post on PT either without an account there.

@MaryPot No, my point is that I can comment via Mastodon and it shows on PeerTube, but I can't comment on PeerTube using the same account. So, I visit the video page on peertube.instance directly and there is no way for me to comment using my Mastodon account without having to copy the URL, open Mastodon, paste it into the search, then reply (therefore leaving PeerTube).I would like to be able to add my comment to a comment box on PeerTube and enter my #Fediverse account.

@matt Agree. It would be much easier to do that. It does not seem to me so difficult to implement. Mastodon has an api, Peertube UI could propose to login in your Mastodon account from their interface and post a comment, right? Maybe not post videos, as you would need a Peertube account for that. But to interact with a video, and like, comment or reshare, that should actually be quite possible.

@matt If anything, we need a more streamlined flow for replying to far-flung instances on your home server (I think there are some browser extensions that help).I wouldn't want to vet every random server to decide if I can give it my OAuth token and let it post as me, or have a lower trust level that's subject to impersonation.

@matt I get that, but you can only post/reply from the account you have on the Fediverse. I don't think compatibility works as it should. You should be able to follow the PT account on your Mastodon account, see the video on Mastodon and comment on Mastodon.A month or so ago, I tried bringing the video up on here and commenting, and even that didn't work.

@judeswae 300% agree 💯 💯 💯 These are the experiences that are missing. "Sign in with Mastodon" is viable - and then you're a viewer mode account able to like and comment on videos, authenticated via Mastodon / Lemmy / Pixelfed / etc.Same goes for a lot of these things - when you reach the original URL of the content, the only option you are presented with is to sign up for a new account on that server.

@annika Fair points. What are these extensions you speak of? Are there some that work across fediverse software? Or are they mostly focusing on Mastodon instances?

@MaryPot Oh, you can do that. I follow a few PeerTube channels via my Mastodon account and they show up in my feed.Maybe it breaks sometimes? I don't know. But it's mostly worked for me.Try it again and turn on post notifications for that channel so you don't miss the posts - maybe it does work but they just get lost in your home feed?

@matt Because you don't have account there. Each server has its own database and your account information is stored only on the server you're on. The other server has no record of you in their database. There is no shared database in fediverse.

@matt Maybe the couple I followed haven't posted or I just missed it.But I did, as I said, try to reply using my Mastodon-account and it didn't work... about a month ago. Things change.

@hirad But I can comment on a PeerTube video on Mastodon and then view the same comment on that video on PeerTube......so why shouldn't I be able to comment directly on the PeerTube page?

@matt think of it like email. you can send an email from a gmail account to a yahoo account. You're logged into your account on your own server. When you send the email/comment, your server takes it, and sends it as a message to the other server to display.

@hirad But I can download a third-party client and send and receive email to any email address.I can sign in to Outlook using a Gmail account or a Yahoo account. The UX here, on fediverse software, is not as forward thinking as it should be.

@matt You can use 3rd party client for fediverse too.You can't sign into Outlook using Gmail! You can use the app for something other than Outlook, but you're not signing into outlook server as an outlook user. That's just not how it works.

@matt I think you should read my message carefully once more. You can sign into your email using the app. But you're not singing into outlook. Outlook is only acting as a typical 3rd party app.

@hirad But then why can't I do the same with PeerTube + Mastodon? Should be perfectly possible.Of course, if I sign into PeerTube using my Mastodon account, it means I can't upload videos - but I should be able to watch and comment and like. You seem to be focusing a lot on the separation of the tech and not how the best user experience would work.

@matt because Peertube isn't a client. It's a server. I'm only explaining how things actually work. I think fediverse people are partially to blame here. They introduced it in a way that created expectations.Fediverse isn't centralized. Each server is completely on its own. Like Facebook and Twitter and YouTube are completely separated. All that activitypub does is letting servers send messages to each other. Nothing more.
