Just watched #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds #StarTrekSNW S2E01.Largely Pike-less, but an enjoyable episode. A new lady who I guess is to be the engineer for the season helps them steal the enterprise to go find La'an who is having fun with Klingons. It was fun, plenty of good moments, but not their best. Who knew Dr. M'Benga could kick ass like that? They're setting up the Gorn to be the series villains. Not sure I like that, but we'll see how it goes.

I'm really hoping that as they've done in various ways with Klingons, Ferengi and even the Borg, they're setting up a flip of perspective. Showing us that what at first appears to be an unambiguously Bad Guy species has a complex internal world, and conflicts over what they do to others.

@strypey @maisiesummers I can't imagine how they're going to flip how they've set them up as absolute monsters who gestate their young in human corpses and even mindlessly murder each other for seemingly no gain. I mean, I'd really, really love them to. I just don't see how they possibly can.

@strypey @SplatterDaddy They did... and in doing so, completely denatured the Borg. The Borg went from terrifying unstoppable force to easy-beat villlains. The Gorn are supposed to be the same: a powerful, unknown enemy. The "baby Gorn" episode from season 1 already denatured them a but. I'd hate to see them reduced.

@maisiesummers> completely denatured the BorgI guess we're looking for different things from ST then. I don't believe in pure evil, and I love it when sci-fi stories set up an evil Other, only to then subvert that dualistic trope. By revealing their side of the story, and showing that our heroes have feet of clay. The first Starship Troopers movie even manages this with the bugs.(1/2)@SplatterDaddy

This is the grand arc of The Matrix trilogy, and why I think most people failed to appreciate Rebooted and Revolutions. They wanted to see the "evil" machines smashed to smithereens. Not to see the AI behind them revealed as a complex, internally-divided society, capable of peaceful coexistence. At a time when corporate media were force-feeding us a post-911 good and evil story - in which Islam was the "evil Other - this was a brave creative choice.(2/2)@maisiesummers@SplatterDaddy
