I know that my approach to balance as an #ActuallyAutistic #teacher is working when I get to summer break not feeling like I just competed in a triathlon from hell. I don’t want to push myself to burnout before resting anymore. Daily balance matters.

@seanwithwords 100%More teachers should consider this approach. We will never get that perfect class, there is always so so so much more we can do to help out students. But, we help no one by burning out. In the long-term, we can be much more effective if happy and healthy. And the cost to current students when we don't constantly put in 110% is probably not as large as we imagine.@academicchatter #teaching

@FantasticalEconomics @academicchatter my therapist helped me get to a place of "good enough" when it came to my effort at work. not from a negative or cynical position, but from a position of "I don't need to be perfect, I can be good enough & be happy with that"as an Autistic person, I put a lot of labor into speaking and performing "correctly," and many allistic or NT teachers are the same way, we put so much unnecessary pressure on ourselves to overwork during hours & not recharge at home

@seanwithwords @FantasticalEconomics @academicchatter The ADHD coach I’m working with said something similar. Don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good…it was after he picked up on some things as perfectionism that I would have never counted as such

@StephZihms @seanwithwords @academicchatter I, with varying success, strive for being happy with where I'm at while also improving in small ways. It's an application of the #GrowthMindset I try to instill in my students. Most of us have a tendency to put unhealthy, unrealistic pressures on ourselves--trying to be perfect, trying to fit in, etc.--which are often unhelpful.Focusing on small improvements rather than not being at some "correct" level is often healthier and more productive.
