@TonyStark It's sad we, as a society, define "freedom" as preventing the government from stopping billionaires from abusing us. It's not the "free market" Adam Smith envisioned, and it's far from what all the empirical evidence shows leads to better outcomes for society (including the rich, by most metrics). This is another thing we can thank the Koch Brothers for. They paid handsomely for econ programs to push this one, very narrow, view. And they continue to do so.

This is what fascism looks like. As someone arrested at a campus protest last spring, I have major qualms with how the Biden administration handled campus dissent. But it was nothing compared to what we are in for now.Our reaction to this statement will help decide if Trump's regeime is able to consolidate power to form the strong-man dictatorship he envisions. Our reaction should be to protest in force across every campus while wearing MASKS. #politics @academicchatter #HigherEd

Good news everyone! "IRS nears deal with ICE to share addresses of undocumented immigrants"I can't imagine a better use for the IRS right now than reversing their longstanding policy of reassuring "undocumented workers that their tax information is confidential and that it is safe for them to file income tax returns without fear of being deported."It's not like ensuring billionaires are paying their taxes has value, or anything...#USPol #politicsGift Link:https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2025/03/22/ice-irs-immigrants-deport/?pwapi_token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJyZWFzb24iOiJnaWZ0IiwibmJmIjoxNzQyNjE2MDAwLCJpc3MiOiJzdWJzY3JpcHRpb25zIiwiZXhwIjoxNzQzOTk4Mzk5LCJpYXQiOjE3NDI2MTYwMDAsImp0aSI6ImVlZDViMjExLTkwZDYtNDRkNi1iODA3LTJkOTQyNzRhZjJiOSIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lndhc2hpbmd0b25wb3N0LmNvbS91cy1wb2xpY3kvMjAyNS8wMy8yMi9pY2UtaXJzLWltbWlncmFudHMtZGVwb3J0LyJ9.YYErFt49qsNUlix8F8-roAlWjN9SrzqvpFYjc-wOiXs&stream=top&utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosam&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter

@jgkoomey @dan613I appreciate the stats! It definitely sounded pretty extreme especially given the improvements in energy efficiency.I'll try to put some thought and research into a better comparison though. Cause I really like the idea of showing the energy use imbalance in concrete terms and even if the average US kitchen uses the same energy as Kenya (or something) that would still be striking. @urlyman @PlanetCritical @jackofalltrades

"The April 2nd action is the equivalent of a rise in the effective US tariff rate of 11 ½ percentage points. The average effective US tariff rate after incorporating all 2025 tariffs is now 22 ½%, the highest since 1909."1909 also saw construction start on the Titanic and founding the NAACP. My point is it was an inconceivably long time ago.We have seen nothing like this in our lives. And, I am pretty sure, this is the largest #tariff increase in history.#economicshttps://budgetlab.yale.edu/research/where-we-stand-fiscal-economic-and-distributional-effects-all-us-tariffs-enacted-2025-through-april

Found an interesting graph with absolutely no relation to current events on Wikipedia.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Life_expectancy_vs_healthcare_spending.jpgI forget who I learned this from, but it's pretty useful to add Reagan's face right around 1981 to help understand changes in US over time.#economics #HealthCare

@apropos True. But every president (except *maybe* Carter) has followed the same neoliberal playbook that Reagan popularized. This certainly isn't all on Reagan, but he's the face of US neoliberalism.

"The paper clip problem" is a philosophical warning about how #AI could run amuck and destroy the world.Imagine an AI programmed with the goal of maximizing paper clip production that gains super intelligence using its vast power to strip mine every ounce of iron and divert resources away from other activities, putting people and environment in existential threat. Now replace "paper clip" with "profits" and "AI" with "CEO" or "billionaire" and you've found the true issue we face. #economics

JD Vance says Europe should have done more to stop Iraq War... yes, I too blame Europe for that disaster. If only Europe were more independent and stopped the US from (largely) unilaterally deciding to attack Iraq.https://www.dw.com/en/jd-vance-says-europe-should-have-done-more-to-stop-iraq-war/a-72250397

“To make it a little more crystal clear, we borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.” - JD Vance, Vice President of the United States of America and complete asshat. It is wonderful this guy is here to help explain #economics to us.I see no downsides to further antagonizing the country where 60% of rare earth minerals - you know the stuff essential for computers and national defense - are mined and 90% are processed.https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/15/us-is-unable-to-replace-rare-earths-supply-from-china-warns-csis-.html

A friend and colleague is testifying in support of the Kelly Loving Act to provide legal protections for #transgender individuals in Colorado on Wednesday and is seeking anecdotes/stories to make the case stronger. If anyone is willing to share examples of how the attacks on transgender folk across the US has caused harm or put them or loved ones in danger, I'd love to pass them on.No pressure and much love to those most directly impacted by this awful hatred.https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb25-1312#USPol

#MayDay is a good time to remember how unions fought, bled, and died to get us the the rights we take for granted today. They didn't wait for slow progress of changing the system solely through the ballot box; they came together to force change by confronting the powerful in solidarity.Today is a good day for us in the US to learn about The Battle of Blair Mountain, which #BehindTheBastards covers well in this podcast.Learn from the past. Had to send my semiannual chiding to conference organizers today."Equity and justice are important to me. I make it a point not to travel nor use my economic power to support states that do not, by and large, hold to those values.A good litmus test, for me, is state-level legislation attacking transgender folk. I encourage NAEE to only hold conferences, and sponser sessions, in states that uphold these values.A handy guide can be found here:https://www.hrc.org/resources/attacks-on-gender-affirming-care-by-state-map " @academicchatter

@TonyStark This will pair nicely with RFK Jr.'s autism registry. For a party whose base is so afraid of big government, it's amazing the kind of power they are willing to give it, so long as it's the "right" party weilding it.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Good, succinct summary of the tech-billionaire dystopia they have planned - though it only alludes to how dismal their fantasy is for us biological cogs. I really like the connection to current world events and really helps make the case for why Greenland is in Trump's crosshairs. Thanks for sharing it.

Love to see it! "At Tscherning, we not only decide how we drive – but also who we drive with. That’s why we’ve chosen to hand over the keys to our Tesla company cars – not because Tesla has become a bad car, but in light of Elon Musk’s political commitment and the opinions he has publicly expressed (and which are increasingly hard to overlook), we as a company have chosen to say “thank you for the ride.”" https://electrek.co/2025/05/15/company-returns-entire-tesla-vehicle-fleet-because-of-elon-musk/#TeslaTakedown
