Should there be some kind of algorithm on the #Fediverse?

@rolle Why centralize an algorithm when you could give users the ability to create their own "algorithm"?Something more personalized like it works for #. For example the user could choose to prioritize some elements over others and his timeline adjusts to these choices.

@simonemargio I guess the question is for ANY type of recommendation algorithm. Many people to seem to be against anything like it.

@rolle Unfortunately, the problem is that for many people the concept of "there's an algorithm that improves your interaction with our social network" is equivalent to something like "give me all your data", and in some ways most of the time it is true.Instead the idea of giving the user the possibility to choose how he wants to manage their "algorithm" can be interesting. It will be the user to choose which data to share to improve the selection of elements such as posts.

@simonemargio @rolle I want (actually NEED) an algorithm here that will stop me from missing content from those accounts I interact with. The more interaction, the higher the percentage of posts I _will_ get to see.-"But such algorithms are the whole problem! Clickbait and outrage posters will exploit them!"Only if I interact with clickbait and outrage posts. I simply don't.The problem comes when such algorithms are the _norm_ - not when they're just an option for me to use for my own benefit.

@troed @simonemargio @rolle Any automatic scoring system for posts outside human control increases the runaway effect of networks which are by definition too fast for humans to interact with.Speed and runaway interaction benefit those who have no life and stay only online, which is precisely the kind of messaging we DON’T want to rise to the top. We want people to take turns, not compete for attention. Not convinced? Read D. Auerbach’s ”Meganets”. https://www.amazon.com/Meganets-Digital-Control-Commandeer-Realities/dp/1541774442#amreading

@gimulnautti @simonemargio @rolle The point of the algorithm I laid out would be that I don't miss the posts I'm interested in, precisely since I'm not online (here) the whole time. Additionally, the scoring I suggested is completely under my control.

@troed @simonemargio @rolle I think you are referring to a client feature.Do you use lists? An algorithm affects how the network spreads messages, what you’re talking about can be implemented without making the network reward unwanted behaviour.

@troed @simonemargio @rolle I just click the Notify bell on profiles I really care about, then when they post it's a notification

@troed @simonemargio @rolle I just click the Notify bell on profiles I really care about, then when they post it's a notification. You can also add people to Lists.

@gimulnautti @simonemargio @rolle What I describe is an algorithm, of course. Like my home automation it removes unneeded manual tasks (like creating lists) since the information needed can be gained from other actions.
