Our mail carrier often comes twice a day. Is that a thing now?Is it because their trucks are too full with all the packages people get that they don't all fit in one circuit or something?

@grammargirl We have old-style delivery on foot, to the door, and I’ve noticed carriers occasionally making two visits. Usually it’s because there was a package (they come by later or earlier with a van), but one day I noticed two carriers going down the block together. It looked like one had the junk/bulk mail and the other had the letters

@grammargirl they've had a hiring freeze for years now, plus a pay and benefit freeze, so they're completely understaffed.

@grammargirl USPS has a contract with Amazon. Given the reduction in first class mail, some carriers are given larger mail routes, and there are also supplementary package visits.

@grammargirl Is it the same person making two stops?I sometimes get two mail deliveries in one day. The usual carrier brings a mix of envelopes and packages, while the second delivery is from a different driver, who only delivers packages.I live near both a carrier annex and a distribution center; I'm not sure if each carrier is coming from a different location, or if the packages are being processed and shipped in multiple shifts.

@grammargirl We have a carrier on foot and I think she does the letters the first run, then larger packages on a second (from her vehicle).

@MikePalumbo @davidhooper I think it's the same person, but I'm not actually sure. I'll have to pay attention more to see if packages and letters come separately. I usually don't pick it up before the second delivery.

@grammargirl I think they are also now the last leg for deliveries from other services, so probably one is the regular route for your daily mail, and the other is (or others are) those other packages (per the commenter above whose name I failed to register before I started replying!).

@grammargirl In the (southern) UK we generally get or letters in a separate delivery from parcels. Then, of course, we get our Amazon and other similar stuff at any time.

@grammargirl this used to be normal in the UK, I know...years ago, before govt services became profit driven concerns (thanks Conservatives)

@fratermus That immediately made me wonder if it's where we get the phrase "twice a day and once on Sunday"! But then I realized the common saying is the other way around: "once a day and twice on Sunday."

@grammargirl I've had this before, too. I'll get a regular mail delivery late morning/early afternoon, and then a random package drop-off around 7pm.
