In watching what's happening with #twitter and #reddit I'm beginning to wonder if we've moved past the post-corporation period of time in the tech industry. Are they even needed, in a world where decentralization exists? I think about my goal of eventually transitioning #tilvids to a community-run, non-profit organization. This model makes so much more sense for all parties involved. What do you think?

@tilvids I’m for decentralization. But this might be a biased place to post this question 😂

@tilvids I enjoy poking around in the Fediverse the same way I enjoy exploring a farmer's market. However, its weaknesses as far as search functionality and post replication are frustrating. Like the farmer's market, it's a fun hangout but not something I'd want to depend on for all my needs.

@jtplatt Wikipedia and archive.org are both shining examples of the power of non-profit tech organizations.

@tilvids Fourth option: Let's transition to decentralised non-profits who have exactly zero anti-vaxxers, billionaries, politicians, or former Twitter owners on the board of directors.

@tilvids I feel that with something like Tilvids Makes the most sense to be non-profit or a cooperative type operation.Ideally Creatives would follow in similar steps and we can have more vibrant internet again.I want to say company run instances can co-exist with purely community ones, but obviously smaller than the monolithic of twitter and reddit.

@tilvids We need to legislate treatment of social media as a public utility. All of them, except the Fediverse.

@tilvids I remember the early days of podcasting and YouTube when it was enthusiast hobbyists, and it didn’t take 30 lifetimes to find something that doesn’t absolutely suck, then came SEO. Everything became worse. Then big media companies figured out there was money to be made, and everything became worse. Then short form content became a thing, and everything became worse. If you could recreate podcasting circa 2008 or YouTube circa 2010, that would be the best.

@tilvids I'd be really interested in how you see tilvids compared to nebula

@tilvids the problem is they still have a strangehold on capital. As long as they retain a chokehold on investment in America, most, except the already wealthy, will continue to be excluded from meaningful economic participation.

@M0YNG I like the general idea behind Nebula, but they still have corporate ownership.
