       @dave The thing we learned from RSS re twitter is unless people work together, and they refused to, the central service always wins.In RSS that meant that subscription was a complicated process that browsers got in the way of, where in twitter it was one obvious click.We could still pull this off but we need feature advantages and it has to be easy to subscribe, but bigger picture, people have to actively, religiously work together.

       @dave Thing that’s wrong with #Twittermigration is that migration isn’t what needs to happen, usually what happens is it’s not either/or it’s and people use all the products.

       @dave The only thing I might question is the statement that "Mastodon had its chance and it blew it." Isn't it because Mastodon is open source, federated, and doesn't take its direction from a motivated C-suite that it can never really have that chance? The comparison to desktop Linux is applicable. Perhaps we err in thinking open source could ever truly compete with funded, for-profit, commercial entities. Perhaps we also err in thinking there's anything wrong with it if it can't.

       @serpicojam i don't agree either. happy to talk about it, if anyone would listen.people made a lot of assumptions about what was worthwhile and most of what they wanted imho was not. taking on twitter is bullshit. it's huge. what you have to do is create something useful and fun and let it become its own thing.
