Imagine a client app that connected to mastodon.social and Bluesky. You could read threads that include posts from both systems. Voila, if a billionaire buys Bluesky, switch to masto. Wouldn’t cost say $30 million and could be done pretty quickly. 😁

@futurebird i agree. when i need to link to a definitive pice about a topic i'm writing about i always go with wikipedia. but their stories are often owned by people with huge conflicts of interest, and thus the story gets warped beyond recognition. it's very clear when you know the actual story.chatgpt, while it uses wikipedia as a source usually gets the story right. yesterday i wrote a piece suggesting that they compete with wikipedia. even got the bot to write up a proposal! :-)

BTW, most people think they don't need to understand whether or Bluesky is decentralized, a claim they make. Here's why you should care.If Bluesky gets a govt order to shut down your account, they can. That's it. That's how you know it's centralized and why you should care.

It would be interesting if Pocket Casts had an API. I would love to be able to one-click subscribe to a podcast in my feed reader. I mention Pocket Casts because it's the podcast client I use on my phone, but I would obviously like to see them all support an API, ideally a common API.

@adam is there such a thing as "podcasting 2.0" and how does it relate to podcasting?

@adam i'll think about what you say. i really am focused on what i say in the podcasts. i really just want to work with developers who can add simple features to product with actual users, that i could possibly use myself to find out if an idea is good, and then see what users say about it.it's the same model i've always used, it works, it's how you bootstrap something like podcasting.i hear a lot of people blowing smoke, saying the usual thing "who does he think he is" and blah etc..

@adam you're taking that quote out of context. it's about naming features of a product, not about the name of the product itself.that was what the RDF guys said when they tried to take over RSS. what difference does it make what you call your format (ie theirs was RSS).if you call something podcasting 2.0 it's very insidious, and i won't ever work with something that is so pushy and selfish. i would never associate with something that got that name, no matter how it got it. never.

We started with a network of writers, and ended up with business models of oligarchs. https://oursocialweb.org

You know how there’s a rule that in order to be a podcast it has to have an RSS feed…What would be the equivalent statement about the web?How can you tell of a document or app is “on the web?”This is something I’d like to work out with people who understand, support and protect the web.

Re the brouhaha with activitypub and atproto. They should fully embrace inbound and outbound RSS and be done with it. In the end if they want to interop, that’s how it’ll happen. However I don’t think either of them wants interop. I’ve seen this movie before.

@pwm @i ostatus is a complex soup of all kinds of stuff i know nothing about. and i was up to date on this stuff.you should build on what you have. reinventing makes adoption slower.

It's great that people are talking about textcasting, but they want to know what it means. Here's the story. When Twitter came out in 2006 they left out most of the writing features of the web. Their competitors have copied the limits. Textcasting says writers don't want the limits. Add these features to your twitter-like social network and we are happy and will sing your praise. https://textcasting.org/

Wouldn't it be great if there were a list of WordPress users who have turned on their ActivityPub plugin, so we know who to subscribe to on our favorite ActivityPub service.

@zeldman I asked chatgpt if there had been any further endorsements or announcements of implementations or any indication of support from AI companies, and the answer was no, no and no.it offered to set up an alert to let me know if it every happened and i said sure. i think they just wanted to say "really simple" something to see if i would write a strongly-worded email to tim o'reilly, and confession, i did. 🙂 https://chatgpt.com/share/69079d4e-2f88-8012-908a-4afac72fbc30

@killyourfm thanks! ;-)the great thing about the web is we can all work together. i've still got big plans for RSS, we need to get these systems really supporting it, not just outbound, inbound too. and supporting all the web writing features of the web. if you really appreciate the open tech, become an advocate. we can get a lot more interop from RSS than ActivityPub. It's simpler, and very much built-in, and thus gives far wider interop than any of the other possible formats.

@scripting one thing I'd like to see from mastodon, is that stories like this should be formatted more attractively. here's a screen shot showing how this post is viewed on the wordpress rendering of this site. this should be an easy thing to dress up, this functionality has been working for about a half a year. it's just CSS. ;-)
