@Momma_Voke @MegasAlexandros Yes, that was my one and only job in fast food, as a teenager.It wasn't a very glamorous job but it was the only thing available at the time. I was there about a year then I got a job at Bloomingdale's in the gift wrap department, a seasonal job that turned into a full time spot for me and made me the experienced shopaholic I am today!!!

@MMA Biscotti sounds yummy… did you OD on bananas? Yesterday I baked for the first time since Greek New Year’s Bread… it was the first sweet thing I’ve had in the months… it was a Lemon Blueberry Soufra… I ate one piece and sent the rest out this morning to be distributed around town so I wouldn’t eat it. 😂This isn’t mine but it looked just fine like this.

It was a TRIPLE banana split: 9 scoops (3 strawberry topped with pineapple, 3 vanilla topped with chocolate, 3 chocolate topped with marshmallow). 9 puffs of whipped cream, almond slivers, and 9 maraschino cherries.I wrote a huge "PIG" in whipped cream instead, and dotted the "I" with a cherry. It looked great. But...turned out, the customer was insulted.

I was kind of confused. When the dish was brought to the table, the entire wait staff served it together, with a drum roll, and the carnival bell rang, and there was an announcement. At the end, the whole staff made the PIG call, ""SOO-EEEE" .The dish was enormous. Too much ice cream for one person and honestly it was a ridiculous dish. I forgot to add that it had 3 whole bananas, too! Just over the top. And with all that, this person got insulted that I called them what they were?

This is the kind of trouble I always get myself into. I think outside the box and I act like I'm more than a drone. I also have a sense of humor which gets the best of me at times. To me this was hilarious. I tried to explain myself to the manager. He responded by making me clock out and go home.So I did what any 17 year old with a brain would do: I started looking for another job with better pay. I realized that food service was not for me, unless I owned the restaurant.

This was probably the fourth time I was told to clock out. I didn't fit the mold of what I was supposed to and it kept getting me into trouble. Another time I got clocked out was because I threw away a scoop of ice cream. The manager accused me of wasting food. We had turned off the freezers in the ice cream station the night before to let them defrost, and came in early to set things back up. All the ice cream was put in the walk- in freezer overnight while the smaller one defrosted.

The small freezer was full of water from the melted ice that built up on its walls. The manager told me to"dip out the well". I was puzzled. He explained that I had to mop it out because there was no drain plug to let all that water out. Feeling stupid, I looked around for a bucket. He impatiently told me to use the mop and the bucket.I knew the mop and the bucket were used on the bathrooms so I gaped at him. He was mad! Ii think he saw the look of horror on my face.

I dipped that mop, the same mop that mopped shitty water off bathroom floors, into the well and started soaking up the melted water. I kept wringing and dipping, dipping and wringing.Finally it was all out and I was about to vomit with disgust. I found some clean rags and was going to try to wipe as much of the dirty water as I could out of the freezer. But the manager saw me doing this and yelled at me for wasting time. He turned the freezer back on so it would be ready for opening time.

He made me put all the ice cream back in the freezer, and I could see the ice crystals building up along the walls of the freezer. Little ice crystals of shitty water. The big tubs of ice cream were set right onto this glittering, icy surface of contaminated water.Our first party was about 30 little kids. They each got a clown sundae. A dish w one scoop of vanilla, a sugar cone upside-down for a hat, two puffs of whip on each side and a cherry for the nose. I started to prep for assembly.

I lined up my dishes and carefully scooped the ice cream, because inside the tubs the ice cream was clean. The manager decided to "help" me and pushed me out of the way to quickly do the scooping himself. @MMA Food service is literally THE SHIT. I was a bar tender once which wasn't so bad, but consessions at a movie theater. YUCK! They didn't even know they were supposed to take off the nozzles of the coke machine and soak them in bleach over night. When they finally did that, they were FILLED with black mold. Same thing in the ice machine. Disgusting! I rarely get food out of the home. You never know what happens to it!

Yeah, I got sent home that time, too.I told this story to the psychiatrist when I was going through my psych eval for my security clearance. One of the questions was about getting into trouble on your job and my assessment was flagged because of it. So I had to explain. He laughed.I guess it is pretty funny. At the time though, I hadn't figured out that life isn't fair and I was very idealistic and principled.I am still very principled.Maybe not so much idealistic, any more, tho.

I tell my students fast food jobs are not supposed to be great because it’ll make you look for something better.When I was 15, I worked at Burger King and as soon as I turned 16, I got a job at Macy’s. I worked there throughout HS and college, and it made me an experienced shopaholic too!
