I hope this image brings you all just a fraction of the joy it brought me taking it. I couldn't figure out why the tiny tarantula hawk was acting so odd and up in a tree. It was in the undergrowth so I didn't notice the valentine ant until I was taking the pictures.#Nature #wasp #Ant #AnimalInteraction

@twizztWow what a moment!Minute ants with mandibles clasped around the antennae (or limbs) of larger insects seems to be a current occurrence. Here is a Cataglyphis nodus ant with a different, tiny ant on attached to its antenna: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/92084232Of course ants will attack wherever they can ... here a (dead) ant remains attached by its mandibles onto the leg of a masked bee, Hylaeus modestus https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/30098847 & https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/30105912#iNaturalist #Hymenoptera #ants #entomology #insects #Cataglyphis #Hylaeus

@albertcardona I really wish it had been just a bit brighter out. I would have loved to try to get a little video. You could just feel the wasps dismay. It kept grooming the wrong antena and on the rare try on the correct one. The cocktail ant didn't even seem to notice. I wonder if it tried depositing a spider in an ant nest. Thanks for sharing the other observations.
