The problem with letting people use something for free is eventually, they think they own it.#Reddit #Twitter

@neil Yep. It was the same with Twitter. It had nothing to do with Elon, and allowing Trump back in, it was all about having to pay for something they used to get for free.Imagine saying to your electricity company: "Can I pay my bill with the goodwill of the hundreds of Mastodon users I have on my server?"

@steevc I think if you pay for a service, that gives you a certain right to take issue with the owners, and yes, people have the [human] right to moan at changes on any service, but when folk try to force owners to revert back to the old way when they don't even give a donation gets my hackles up tbh because in my "Sweeping generalisation" those are the types of people who think others should pay for them.

@dick_turpin If Reddit started with a reasonable API price and a sensible time frame for roll out, this would all be a non-event. But the API costs are exorbitant and the 30-day gap between announcement and implementation is not enough time for developers to increase their revenue enough to afford the first month let alone make a profit. #Reddit’s argument is worthless when they announce API prices that are 20x what they claimed each user actually costs. Pure #greed.

@MrRambuctious This is what happens when people settle down in almost a parasitical fashion, either making money or benefiting personally from someone else's work and then start crying when they're asked to pay. I find it even more hysterical when folk feel they have the right to tell the owners what they should be charging; it's almost like a last-ditched attempt at ownership. Some folk really do not understand the ownership concept of being allowed to play with someone else's train set. 🤷♂️

@dick_turpin It is ironic Reddit are benefiting from everyone else’s content. Reddit doesn’t actually produce anything. They host. And now people are leaving taking their trains with them.

@MrRambuctious Mmm? It's a moot point. I see the concept that "Popularity" brings greater membership, which is a big incentive for advertisers but to my mind, it still begs the question: "And how much did you pay for your account?"I wonder what the net effect will be to make these communities private? Isn't that a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face?Lots of people drifted back to Twitter. I'm sure once Reddit users have stopped sulking they'll be back.

@dick_turpin I get that, but sometimes the price or terms change and you have to like it or lump it.Even going from free to a small charge is likely to lose you a lot of users, so it's a big move.

@dick_turpin if you don’t pay to use it and nobody pays you to use it the it’s not the product, you are.
