I no longer remember who said it, but I keep coming back to something I read here, #LLMs like ChapgTT are basically fancy autocomplete. Those robots are not coming for our jobs... https://zirk.us/@ChrisMayLA6/110529565329384714

@Ruth_Mottram @thesiswhisperer called it a calculator for words - which I really liked. I’m just surprised how many people think it’s legit generating things from scratch rather than it being a fancy algorithm

@StephZihms @thesiswhisperer yes that's also a good way to put it!

@StephZihms @Ruth_Mottram @thesiswhisperer except the calculator usually gives back correct calculations.

@StephZihms @Ruth_Mottram @thesiswhisperer Then again, most jobs are also mostly fancy algorithms and don't necessarily "generate things from scratch." I sympathise with this image, I even posted it myself recently (https://sigmoid.social/@chrisoffner3d/110479789229776370) but I just left an industry (visual effects for film & TV) where a lot of work that took many hours of human labour only a few years ago can now be done either entirely or 90% automatically, so I'm not ready to be too smug about the limits of LLMs.

@chrisoffner3d @StephZihms @thesiswhisperer yeah, it's a fair point. Some are definitely going to be affected more than others...

@Ruth_Mottram @StephZihms @thesiswhisperer My whole life the narrative was that automation is coming for manual labour that requires less education whereas office-y mental labour is safe because it's "creative."Now we see that a lot of manual labour proves much harder to automate than many office jobs. I'm wondering if there will be a change towards highly skilled manual labour and craftsmanship becoming a safer career path while becoming, say, an accountant, will become a precarious choice.

@chrisoffner3d @Ruth_Mottram @StephZihms it's interesting times for sure. My kid is studying data science, which is likely to become obsolete... we're having lots of chats about repositioning, but I wonder now if his (somewhat surprising) talent for people work, now in retail, but very translatable beyond that, might be the safer bet. It's wild. Still can't help reflecting that every 'labour saving' technology introduced in my some 52 years of life (with the possible exception of household appliances) has created more work, not less.

@thesiswhisperer @Ruth_Mottram @StephZihms I think the overall trend isn't necessarily so much toward *less work* than it is toward *work that requires qualifications that are met by a larger number of people.*The more supply there is in a particular kind of labour(er), the more they compete on price, and the lower the wages employers need to pay them.

@thesiswhisperer @Ruth_Mottram @StephZihms If you can shift a lot of the work onto an underpaid and debased underclass, whom you constantly remind of their worthlessness because "anybody could do that job," you can save a lot of labour cost despite having potentially even increased the overall work required.
