Thank heavens #bbcr4today had Chris Packham on after that member of the public who thinks nature owes her. He was magnificent. Spot on. Except for referring to fish 'stocks'.

@trabimechanic Yes, I was also thinking of that. Was not aware of the awkward French translation. Similar in some ways to Mack Walker's German Home Towns in the same era of scholarship. Weber was a smart and idiosyncratic character, fine and witty writer, too.

@CitizenWald when you say 'thinking of that' - could you say what? (Returned to your reply again to see if I understood it yet but I still don't - I'm quite often obtuse though...)

@trabimechanic No, *you* are not obtuse. I was replying in a hurry, and doing what i tell students not to do, namely leaving the referent unclear. I think I was thinking of Weber's argument that it was actually not until well into the 19th century French rural dwellers began to feel they were part of a common "France." E.g. when going to Paris, peasants from the provinces used to say, I am going to France.

@CitizenWald still mysterious, since what you replied to was my post on Chris Packham's response to a member of the public complaining about kelp on Weymouth beach. He said kelp was magnificent and we shouldn't complain but should go and get familiar with the stuff. I can stretch to go to an English beach and you will find yourself in rotting seaweed... but I think you may be in a different conv. But I think Chris Packham is splendid anyway https://www.dorset.live/news/dorset-news/chris-packham-tells-tourists-complaining-8508762

@trabimechanic Ah, totally my error, then! I thought I was replying to a somewhat arcane historical discussion. But since i have you tagged for alerts in my timeline and read your posts regularly, I must have gotten mixed up.See? I really was obtuse. Apologies for the confusion. It's been a really hectic few weeks at work and we here are all exhausted

@trabimechanic Thanks! Not great, but one survives.I just ask myself; Is it like: The Holocaust? Am I worse off than a refugee/migrant from, e.g., Syria, Sudan (or whatever the current pressing case). If not (which is always the case), I get on with my life.Which is not to say, of course, that we should not continue to resist exploitation. It's just that one has to put things in perspective. And you? Sounds as if you are in a rough neighborhood as well as dealing with a perverse government
