Sad that so many of us have to learn these things like this. I do take plenty of blame3 for avoiding helping out and not trying to be more involved as a kid. Pretty common to have dads try to drag son out to the garage to help only for mom to peck at him because “he’s a kid, let him play”

@WashedOutGundamPilot I was stubborn and didn't want to put in the grunt work while watching my dad do things. Nintendo was more fulfilling. I kick myself a lot for not spending time with him helping out with his construction projects, but when you're a kid, would you rather sand drywall or play Mario? Then again, he had an attitude toward everything of "if you do anything beyond the basics you'll screw it up and that's unacceptable", so there was only so much to actually learn.Honestly, Youtube has done a ton when it comes to info on DIY stuff. I've learned a ton fixing my car just from watching some weird guy from Quebec do it first.

@mrsaturday Yeah but that’s not ideal. We should have learned from our dads more, the fault is distributed but it’s still there. I’m tired of listening to guys whine that they never learned, when I watched them say “nah I’m busy” as they sat there on their Xbox, year after year. We gave up something of value for less than nothing, and now we’re playing catch-up. Parents share some of that blame, too, but we can’t duck our burdern

@WashedOutGundamPilot I'm still a little bitter about not being able to drive a stick because he thought me not understanding it right away meant I was going to wreck the engine, only to find out in my 30s "grind em until you find em" is a boomerism for learning how to work a clutch

@WashedOutGundamPilot I was lucky enough to be curious, and video games/television didn’t enter my house until I was in my earliest teens. By then I was too concerned with skulking the neighborhood on my bike with the boys looking for girls our age and setting stuff on fire. My mom was a liberal but it never affected me somehow. She used to fall asleep a lot or she’d sleep in til 12 when I was like 5 or 6 and I’d just leave the apartment and walk around and fuck with stuff. I never had a father, but was lucky enough to have men in my family that owned businesses and I loved hanging out with them. They were always exceptionally hard on me, but they were always right. I feel like a lot of kids didn’t have someone being hard enough on them. I did have a ps2 but I was never really allowed on ( but looking back that thing was so fucking addicting. If someone didn’t pull me off of it constantly I would have been fucked. Some days I would wake up and want to play games and although upset that I was denied I would just have to find something else to do. I still play games to this day, and they are still very addicting. The few men I had in my developing years taught me not just how to fix a specific problem, but how to approach a situation and always have a solution. Being able to fix anything is like being a god among men these days. Women co-workers will love you, people (with no technical bones in their body) will pay you. Back then I hated being forced to shovel snow for hours or move wood or help fix some derelict shit, but now I wouldn’t take it back for anything. I would be crying outside cold or wet or something but those moments certainly hardened me. Some of my early jobs working with kids that never had that was BRUTAL. They don’t know how to do anything, even if they actually had a father. Nobody knows how to do shit anymore and my income basically depends on that.

@HintofLime That’s the refrain we’ve always said. “boy I hated it back then, but I wouldn’t have it any other way now“

@mrsaturday @WashedOutGundamPilot Yeah, I have only basic skills with tools. My dad would say "the best way you can help is to stay out of the way", so I did. and like you said, I would rather play Mario or Sonic than work with hand tools. So for me, yes, I accept that I have done nothing (as an adult) to improve these skills. that's on me because literally nobody is stopping me from trying or learning. I just choose not to because that's what I've always done.however, as a child, my parents should have done more to force me to participate. yes, I expect I would have resented it initially (because Mario is more fun, after all). I think for many dads (including my own) it's probably more of a framing problem. it shouldn't be a choice between Mario and learning how to use tools. it's a choice between playing video games by yourself or spending time with your old man (which I dare say the majority of boys would rather do).

@haberdasher @WashedOutGundamPilot If you ever decide to try, I can't recommend this channel enough if you have to fix your car. I've been able to DIY my way through stuff my dad would go to a mechanic over.https://youtube.com/@AutoRepairGuys

good thing it wasn't a Deere, he'd have to call the factory to send out an engineer with a laptop to reinstate the always-on internet... or something.

@WashedOutGundamPilot so that's what they meant by "runs off the smell of an oily rag"
