@tchambers @rolle #BirdUI Federated, Direct Messages, and Bookmarks sections are no longer available on mobile/narrow viewports -- I'd call that a blocker. On a small mobile screen, the two fixed bars ate a lot of space, it felt less... optimized. On the desktop, the moment I first saw the Twiter-like nav I thought "too soon!", but that was me 🥲

@adxlv I thought so too, until I randomly touched that bottom nav bar and realised it scrolls horizontally to reveal all the other icons. Also, weirdly enough, the order of those icons on mobile is different. I have "Lists" as a 4th element, while it's usually the last one. In fact, I never use Lists, so it feels even more odd.@tchambers @rolle

@m2m The horizontal scroll is not obvious by design, more detail here: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/issues/26The order is highly opinionated, some (like myself) use the lists a lot and it being the last on mobile WITH the scrolling bar is sometimes a nuisance. The theme was originally meant to be hackable but I understand there are concerns if it's forced on all users. There are ways to make it optional and user-based like adding it as a Site theme option so everyone can use it if they choose so.#MastodonBirdUI@adxlv @tchambers

@rolle I've been using the PWA (with Vivaldi) on Android for a long while. Since I hate how small Mastodon looks on my phone, I managed to increased the zoom before creating my PWA. I have no idea if my current zoom is responsible for the fact that I'm only seeing 4 icons: Home / Search / Notifications / ListsI'd love if the theme was optional. I often customise websites through the Stylus extension, however, default Mastodon looks good to me (besides the font size).@adxlv @tchambers

@m2m It CAN be made as an optional Site theme. See the hack made by @stux: https://github.com/mstdn/Bird-UI-Theme-Admins @adxlv @tchambers

@rolle @m2m @stux @adxlv Indeed: but in this case, I think that would require me to move hosting provider. Long story.

@tchambers @rolle @stux @adxlv genuine question: why the need for changing the UI? Which issue are we trying to solve with a different theme? I'm an advanced user, yet I find this theme not that usable, I keep missing the reply box when I try to respond to people, there are no borders, it breaks muscular memory. I recognise that I might be in the minority to have scrollbars visible at all times, but that emoji icon overlay gets hit every time I try to scroll the posting window.

@m2m Because you can. It's a free, open web.See this: https://mementomori.social/@rolle/110139191307581764And this: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui#i-want-background-color-to-the-compose-formFeel free to modify it to your likings. Each instance can take requests and make their own, some admins are already doing that. It's completely open source.@tchambers @stux @adxlv

@rolle I'm not against your design per se, and I appreciate the open source ethos of the project. I just don't see the need. Granted, I don't have my own instance so it depends on my admin. I'm not entirely sure if a poll is the correct answer, but I see why it's been tested this way.I'm not protesting, I simply don't see the need to change something that's working, to resemble something (Twitter) that never worked for me and many other that chose Mastodon.@tchambers @stux @adxlv

@m2m I have the opposite opinion as a humble UI designer. I actually like Twitter's UI choices, they're mostly great up to 2022 where the glitches began with the font sizes etc.I think Mastodon's current stable UI has major usability and accessibility issues. Eugen has stated there will be major UI updates, I'm really looking forward to seeing them. Perhaps one day my UI will be indeed not needed. On that day Mastodon's core UI will be superior. While saying this, I'm glad there is a choice.@tchambers @stux @adxlv

@rolle @m2m @tchambers @adxlv :blobcatgiggle: I also am a fan of Twitter's UI, always beenThey where one of the first with the 'new type of ui' I think plus Bootstrap also came from them what was a huge win at the time!I liked Twitter because of it's UI not the content :flan_laugh:
