For all the "you need to build in public" people... https://austinkleon.com/2023/05/07/artists-must-be-allowed-to-make-bad-work/

One of the issues I have with "create in public" / "open the garage door" people, is that they assume the "commons" to be a neutral, friendly, "workshop-y scene. And, for people who create pallateable work, it is. But, for anyone who creates at the fringes, and particularly those on the fringes of poltics + art, social media is an especially violent environment. It is not a" safe space." It is a terrible one.

Which, for those with less conviction, when confronted with this social violence, pushes them back into more tame work. Ever wonder why 99.9999% of "radical work" on social media is tame? Because it needs to be if you don't wanna get swatted. So, yeah. Create in public if what you're creating sits comfortably within the parameters of what's acceptable. But, if your work isn't that, just keep doing it the ol fashioned way, among peers, offline, in galleries, at readings where only 10 ppl show up.

@bobdoto Totally fair. As paradoxical as it may sound though, you could create work in public anonymously or pseudonymously. I do this for a few things I want to keep separate from my real name.

@nicole @bobdoto *raises hand. Very far from the fringe but choose to use a pseudonym anyways.
