I heard of some more layoffs recently and that reminded me to share:https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2014/you-can-sometimes-negotiate-when-being-laid-off/"You Can (Sometimes) Negotiate When Being Laid Off"since people may still find use in the tale of how I succeeded in negotiating a counterproposal when I got laid off several years ago.

@brainwane Huh. I did not realize that not everyone negotiates when you are laid off. Your specific instance was a very interesting and unique one. The negotiation I'm used to is “we'll give you 4 weeks" "are you joking? the standard is 12" "ok we'll give you 6" "alright great I'll take that; bye”

@dmitry I presume you mean 12 weeks of severance pay, and that 12 weeks is the standard in the UK? In the US, as far as I know, there is no specific standard for that, and (especially at smaller firms) it's common to be laid off with zero severance pay, terminating employment the same day as the layoff notice. And it seems (anecdotally) very uncommon for US employees to negotiate their layoff.Sorry to hear you've been laid off often enough to be used to it! What a pain.

@brainwane oh, all my experience is US. certainly there’s no legal standard. the “standard” I meant is what I’ve seen for me and my friends in Silicon Valley. in terms of people not negotiating… I guess this deserves some attention and education! IMO when you’re laid off the employer is eager to quickly get you to agree never to sue, so you always have a little leverage. always worth asking for more weeks of severance pay
